In 2026, Hyundai is betting on electric vehicles by sending the Ioniq 9 on one of the most challenging expeditions through the Moroccan desert. The new participant in the charity project ‘Desierto de los Niños’ must prove its endurance on sandy and rocky roads where regular cars often fail. This time, the route passes through remote regions, with the main goal being to support children and youth in isolated settlements.
Organizers chose to start at the end of March to take advantage of mild weather and avoid extreme heat. The convoy includes 43 vehicles and 144 participants, featuring engineers, volunteers, and Hyundai representatives. Each car is fitted with special Hankook tires designed for the harsh desert conditions. The Ioniq 9 is equipped with the latest Dynapro AT2 tires, providing stability on loose sand and rocks.
This year, Hyundai is sending an electric vehicle with a 110.3 kWh battery on such a long journey for the first time. According to RUSSPAIN.COM, tests like these help reveal the real capabilities of modern electric cars outside urban environments. Alongside the Ioniq 9, the convoy features Santa Fe, Kona, Tucson, and a hybrid Staria, which was provided for the needs of the Alain Afflelou foundation.
Route and new destinations
Special attention is given to new locations that project participants haven’t reached before. For the first time, the expedition will visit Boulmane Dades, located at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. Here, Hyundai will support two local associations that work with children with disabilities. They have prepared specialized equipment and materials tailored to the needs of each child.
In Boulmane-Dadès, the library is also set for renovation: the premises will be equipped with modern technology and the book collection will be expanded. This will give local children access to educational resources that were previously unavailable. On the way to Erfoud, the caravan will stop in Fezoou, where several years ago Hyundai established a school and launched a palm grove planting project. In the future, this initiative is expected to become an economic support for the village.
The next stop is Ramlia, a small settlement in the heart of the desert. Here, Hyundai is completing the construction of a sports complex with artificial turf and modern locker rooms. For local teenagers, this is an opportunity to play sports year-round despite the harsh climate.
Technology and challenges
Desert trials are not only a test of equipment but also an opportunity for Hyundai to demonstrate the advantages of electric vehicles in extreme conditions. The Ioniq 9 is expected to show how modern batteries and management systems can withstand extended use without access to standard infrastructure. Special attention is paid to energy efficiency and the ability to charge quickly in field conditions.
All Hyundai vehicles in the caravan are equipped with tire pressure monitoring systems and additional filters for protection against sand. This reduces the risk of breakdowns and increases participant safety. According to company representatives, such projects help improve technology and adapt it to the real needs of users.
An important aspect of the expedition remains its social mission. Hyundai doesn’t just showcase its vehicles but actively engages with local communities. This year, special focus is given to supporting families who need transportation to travel on difficult roads. The company donates some vehicles for use by associations and educational institutions.
Investing in the Future
The Desierto de los Niños project expands its reach and scope of support every year. In 2026, Hyundai not only tests new models but also invests in infrastructure for children and youth. At each stop along the route, the team organizes workshops, sports events, and educational meetings. This helps involve local residents in modern initiatives and improve living standards in remote areas.
The expedition route passes through regions where access to education and sports is limited. Thanks to Hyundai’s support, children gain new opportunities for development, and local schools and associations receive essential equipment. This approach drives long-term change and strengthens ties between business and society.
Hyundai is one of the largest automakers actively introducing electric vehicles into the mass market. The Ioniq 9 model has become a symbol of a new phase for the brand, combining long range and advanced technologies. Participation in the Desierto de los Niños project allows the company not only to test its innovations but also to contribute to social initiatives by supporting children and youth in remote regions of Morocco. Through such projects, Hyundai strengthens its reputation as a responsible manufacturer and broadens the potential for electric vehicle adoption.
