Barcelona activist Maria Campuzano, a symbol of the fight against energy poverty, has passed away

Farewell to Maria Campuzano will take place at Tanatorio Ronda de Dalt on Monday

Maria Campuzano, a well-known advocate for the right to water and energy, has died at the age of 44. Her contribution to combating energy poverty is recognized by colleagues and organizations. A farewell ceremony will be held in Barcelona.

Maria Campuzano Guerra, one of the most prominent figures in the movement for access to basic utilities and against energy poverty, has passed away in Barcelona at the age of 44. Her death was reported on Sunday by representatives of Enginyeria Sense Fronteres, where Campuzano had been actively working in recent years. She was not only a member of this organization, but since its foundation, also acted as a public spokesperson for Alianza contra la Pobreza Energética.

Maria Campuzano became a symbol of the fight for the right to water and energy for vulnerable groups. Colleagues emphasize that her work went far beyond local initiatives: she built international alliances that, according to Enginyeria Sense Fronteres, were key to advancing collective rights to energy and energy independence at a global level. The organization notes that Campuzano was unafraid to speak openly about rights violations and to confront large energy companies, accusing them of abuses and impunity.

In a statement, Enginyeria Sense Fronteres highlights that Maria Campuzano inspired those around her with her example and integrity. Her contribution to defending basic rights and fighting for decent housing is also recognized by Alianza contra la Pobreza Energética. According to colleagues, she always placed human life and dignity at the center of her work, refusing to allow serious social issues to be ignored.

Farewell to Maria Campuzano will take place on Monday, April 27, at Tanatorio Ronda de Dalt at Scala Dei street, 17-37. Visitation will be from 16:00 to 18:00, with the ceremony beginning at 18:00 in Hall 19. Representatives of public organizations, colleagues, and local residents for whom Campuzano’s work became an example of civic responsibility are expected to attend.

The issue of energy poverty and the right to housing remains one of the most pressing in Spain. In recent years, attention to these topics has increased, especially against the backdrop of rising utility prices and pressure on vulnerable social groups. In this context, the work of Maria Campuzano and other activists like her becomes particularly significant. Questions of social justice and the protection of vulnerable segments of the population are regularly the subject of public discussion, as was the case at the recent Izquierda Unida anniversary congress, where challenges related to housing and social policy were discussed (more details on the position of the left-wing forces).
