A young woman from Badalona died after being struck by a rock in Sadernes, Girona. Emergency services responded quickly, but she succumbed to her injuries. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

An 18-year-old woman from Badalona lost her life on Saturday after being critically injured by a falling rock while at a natural pool in Sadernes, located in the Alta Garrotxa region of Girona. The incident occurred around 15:30 at Gorg Blau, within the municipality of Montagut i Oix. Emergency services, including the Bombers de la Generalitat and SEM medical teams, were dispatched to the scene following the alert.

According to official sources, the young woman suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest as a result of the impact. She was airlifted in critical condition to Hospital Josep Trueta de Girona, where medical staff initially managed to stabilize her. Despite these efforts, her injuries proved fatal and she passed away later that afternoon, as confirmed by hospital representatives.

The Mossos d'Esquadra have opened an investigation to clarify the exact circumstances surrounding the accident. Officers also attended the site in Montagut i Oix to gather evidence and interview witnesses. The authorities have not yet released further details about the sequence of events or whether any safety measures were in place at the time.

This fatality comes amid ongoing concerns about safety in natural recreational areas across Spain, especially during periods of high visitor numbers. The tragedy in Girona follows other recent incidents that have prompted emergency responses and investigations. For example, a series of deadly road accidents in Castellón and Málaga earlier this year resulted in multiple fatalities and stretched emergency resources, as reported in coverage of major accidents affecting Spanish regions.

Natural pools and gorges like Gorg Blau are popular destinations for locals and tourists, particularly in the warmer months. However, such sites can present hidden risks, including rockfalls and sudden changes in water conditions. Authorities regularly remind visitors to exercise caution and to be aware of their surroundings, especially in less regulated environments. The ongoing investigation by the Mossos d'Esquadra will seek to determine whether any additional safety recommendations or measures are needed to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
