A 35-year-old man in Murcia was arrested after a technical error revealed his real face during a digital identity scam. Police say he used AI to impersonate over 30 people and bypass security checks.

A sophisticated cyber fraud operation in Molina de Segura, Murcia, was brought down after a single technical glitch exposed the suspect’s real identity. National Police arrested a 35-year-old man accused of using artificial intelligence to digitally mask his face and impersonate dozens of victims during online verification processes. The breakthrough came when, for just one second, a failure in the AI application dropped the digital mask, allowing investigators to capture the suspect’s true appearance and confirm his identity.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, the man attempted to bypass security systems at a company issuing electronic certificates. By leveraging a Russian-made AI tool, he was able to overlay his face with a digital replica of his victims’ features during mandatory video calls. This allowed him to try to obtain digital signatures under false identities, which could then be used to open bank accounts, request loans, or sign up for mobile lines in other people’s names.

Police say the suspect made at least 38 attempts to impersonate more than 30 real individuals. Early efforts were crude, with visible watermarks from the AI software, but over time he refined his methods, even constructing a homemade lighting setup to mimic the security holograms found on genuine Spanish ID cards. Despite these precautions, a brief disconnection during one of the video calls caused the digital mask to vanish momentarily, exposing his real face for two frames—enough for forensic analysis to lead to his arrest.

The investigation revealed that the man was already known to authorities for previous frauds, including classic car rental scams and digital crimes such as carding. In this case, he used a free version of the AI software and may have received guidance from online tutorials or other individuals. To further cover his tracks, he adopted advanced security measures like VPNs to hide his IP address and SIM swapping to use multiple untraceable phone numbers. Police identified over 320 phone lines linked to 24 different devices, most registered with stolen identities in Murcia.

When officers from the Central Cybercrime Unit raided his home in June, they seized encrypted computers, multiple mobile phones, and equipment believed to be used for a possible marijuana grow operation. The encrypted laptop has so far prevented investigators from fully assessing the scale of the fraud. The suspect now faces charges of continuous forgery of official documents.

Spain has seen a sharp rise in cybercrime, with the Ministry of the Interior reporting 489,248 cyber-related offenses in 2025—a 5.3% increase from the previous year. Of these, 430,493 were computer fraud cases, making up 88% of all cybercrime and 17.4% of total crime. For comparison, only 70,178 such cases were recorded in 2016, marking a 513% increase over the past decade. The growing sophistication of digital scams, including the use of deepfake technology, is a concern for authorities.
