Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares has put forward an initiative that could shift the balance of power in Europe. In an interview with Politico, he stated that the European Union should consider creating its own unified army to ensure its security without being fully dependent on external allies.
According to Albares, the current US involvement in Middle Eastern conflicts presents a unique window of opportunity for Europe. “We must be free from dependence. We need an army, a common defense capability,” the minister emphasized. He pointed out that this does not mean abandoning NATO, but if the alliance cannot guarantee the same level of protection as before, European countries will have to take responsibility for their own defense.
Albares also noted that the idea of a unified EU army does not contradict commitments to NATO, but raises the question of the alliance’s real effectiveness under new circumstances. “If NATO no longer provides the level of security it once did, then we, as Europeans, must do more,” he added.
