Military Join Efforts to Contain Major Forest Fire in Huelva. A large-scale forest fire continues to rage in Huelva, affecting over 3,600 hectares. Authorities have deployed military forces and reinforced emergency services. The situation is expected to worsen due to changing winds.
In Huelva province, the battle continues against one of the most difficult wildfires in recent years. On Tuesday evening, the Andalusian authorities raised the response plan to level two and requested military assistance. That night, 50 soldiers from the second battalion of the Unidad Militar de Emergencias (UME) and 10 units of equipment arrived at the scene. Their task is to contain the spread of the fire, which in a single day destroyed more than 3,600 hectares in the Los Turbios area, municipality of Villanueva de los Castillejos.
The situation is complicated by a forecasted increase in wind after 11 a.m. According to the operations headquarters, weather conditions were the cause of the blaze's sharp intensification the previous evening: the wind strengthened more than expected and reignited once-contained hotspots on the fire's left flank, tail, and head. The northern direction remains particularly dangerous due to the high density of vegetation.
Overnight into Wednesday, emergency services focused on backburning, deploying heavy machinery, and taking preventive measures near populated areas. Around 300 people are involved in the operation, including firefighters from Huelva and municipal units. By morning, more than 25 aerial resources are expected to join. Rail service on the Gibraleón section has been temporarily suspended, while roads remain open for now.
The fire threatens several municipalities at once. Yesterday afternoon, the flames reached the outskirts of Gibraleón and San Bartolomé de la Torre. Local authorities have already announced their intention to petition for the area to be declared a state of emergency zone. In the provincial capital, the smell of smoke is clearly noticeable, despite the significant distance from the blaze.
According to experts, the most challenging situation remains on the left flank—here, the vegetation load is highest. The head of the fire has approached Gibraleón closely, while in the tail area, where the fire started, efforts continue to prevent new outbreaks due to shifting winds. During the day, columns of smoke once again became visible from a considerable distance.
Large-scale forest fires are not uncommon in Andalusia: just last year, the region faced several major incidents, and in neighboring Malaga, emergency services were unable to fully extinguish the fire at the Ibis hotel for two weeks— details of this case also sparked widespread public response. Overall, according to RUSSPAIN, in recent years the authorities have stepped up measures to prevent and respond to natural disasters; however, weather anomalies and the high density of forests continue to pose serious risks to the region.
