Isabel Díaz Ayuso is under renewed scrutiny in Madrid’s Assembly as opposition parties demand explanations for a luxury penthouse purchased by the public company Planifica Madrid. What would usually be a routine session has turned into a direct challenge to Ayuso’s credibility and her government’s management of public assets.
Ayuso opened the session with a two-hour speech defending her administration and announcing more than 100 new measures for Madrid. Yesterday, she spoke without interruption, using the platform to criticize the central government and rally her supporters. Today, applause from her own party has faded as Más Madrid, PSOE, and Vox press her for details about the penthouse deal that has followed her through the summer.
The controversy centers on Planifica Madrid’s purchase of a high-end apartment that, according to opposition leaders, serves no clear public function. Ayuso has denied any personal interest in the property, saying it was meant as a temporary office during renovations at Sol. But the government has kept the purchase file confidential, fueling suspicion and leaving the opposition unsatisfied. Spanish media report the purchase price at €6.3 million, with some estimates rising to €6.4 million. The property was later listed for sale at around €6.69 million.
Each opposition party has 30 minutes to question Ayuso. She can respond after each round or wait until the end for a single reply. The penthouse deal is expected to dominate, with all three parties demanding full documentation and a clear explanation for the purchase. The secrecy around the file has only increased calls for transparency. PSOE Madrid says Planifica Madrid refused to provide the full set of documents to a socialist deputy, adding to the political pressure.
Vox is also expected to address the ongoing migration crisis in Ceuta, where more than 70,000 people have crossed the border, creating a humanitarian emergency. Alongside housing, education, and regional development, these issues mean Ayuso’s government faces criticism on several fronts. The opposition also wants to know who authorized the penthouse purchase, when the decision was made, and the total cost to taxpayers.
Outside the Assembly, Más Madrid has taken its protest to the streets, sending out a bus with Ayuso’s face and the slogan ‘Para ti el alquiler imposible; para Ayuso, el ático de lujo’—a pointed reference to the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Madrid and the growing gap between public officials and residents struggling with high rents.
This is not Ayuso’s first controversy. Her administration has faced resistance from unions and public sector workers before, such as when Madrid Metro staff blocked her plan for 24-hour weekend service, a conflict reported earlier. Each dispute has chipped away at the image of unchallenged leadership her team has tried to maintain.
Madrid’s housing crisis is not theoretical. Rents keep rising, and public frustration is growing as officials seem removed from the realities most residents face. The penthouse purchase, kept secret and explained with shifting stories, has become a symbol of the gap between government and the public. Ayuso’s refusal to release the full file only deepens the sense that her team is more focused on appearances than accountability. In a political climate already strained by migration and economic uncertainty, today’s Assembly session is more than a routine debate. It is a test of the government’s willingness to answer for its actions. The longer Ayuso’s team keeps the details hidden, the more this episode risks defining her time in office as one marked by evasion rather than openness.
