Bizum payments are now accepted at more than 1.6 million Spanish establishments. The service reaches 20 million users and covers around 75% of bank terminals.

Bizum is moving into everyday shopping in Spain. More than 1.6 million establishments now accept payments through the platform, which is available to 20 million people. The service reaches around 75% of bank terminals in Spain. That is far beyond the scale of a limited pilot. According to EFE and business newspaper Expansión, the nearly 20 million eligible users represent about 60% of Bizum's total customer base.

The change for customers is straightforward. They can pay in shops, bars and restaurants by transferring money from their bank account while holding their mobile close to a payment terminal. The option is available through the banking applications of participating institutions or through Bizum Pay.

On 15 September 2026, Portuguese payment provider Eupago announced the launch of Bizum for local merchants, opening the scheme to Portugal’s retail market and Spanish consumers travelling there.

The rollout is already moving at a measurable pace.

In recent weeks, users have made an average of three Bizum payments in shops each week. The company has also confirmed that terminals at more than 25 major retail chains in different sectors already accept in-person payments. The figure points to fast adoption among active users. Physical payments are still moving from an early rollout toward wider everyday use.

Bizum began introducing the function gradually on 18 May 2026. The stated goal is that by December 2026, the vast majority of the platform's 32 million users will be able to pay in physical stores through a bank transfer started on their mobile. Banks are coordinating the expansion. They are adding the feature to their applications and using their existing terminal infrastructure.

The regulatory context is also widening. Spain’s Ministry of Justice has reported that Bizum accounts for around 35% of online payments for public services in some procedures, while the tax authorities’ debate over reporting professional Bizum receipts is bringing greater attention to how businesses record these transactions.

Bizum Pay became available for Android and iOS devices on 14 July. Its Google Play listing shows another update dated 16 September 2026. The listing describes the product as a Bizum fintech wallet for payments and says access remains temporarily limited to authorised customers and organisations. From 21 September 2026, the digital wallet is also available in English and in Spain's co-official languages. Users therefore have an option beyond the payment tools built into their banks' own applications.

Banks are driving the expansion. They are distributing the function to customers and merchants while adding it to their existing applications. Ángel Nigorra, the director general of Bizum, said the banks' coordinated work has been decisive in extending the terminal network and building customer confidence. This model helps explain how the service can use a large share of existing payment infrastructure instead of creating a separate merchant network.

Bizum's underlying infrastructure was already large before physical retail payments arrived. In 2025, Spain recorded an average of more than 3.4 million instant transfers through Bizum every day.

The development is separate from an earlier Ceuta report on migrant child centres. It belongs to the same practical news landscape, where everyday services increasingly depend on digital access and established institutions.

For customers, the result is another way to use a service that already handles millions of instant transfers. For merchants, the change is Bizum's arrival at a large share of existing bank terminals, rather than the creation of a separate payment network. With 20 million people already covered and December set as the next expansion target, the company has made physical payments a major part of its platform. The figures show that Bizum is no longer limited to transfers between individuals. It is becoming a substantial retail payment option in Spain.
