Routine blood tests may reveal cancer risk earlier than previously thought. Oxford researchers found that tracking changes over time, not just single abnormal results, can give doctors a better warning. This could help primary care spot cancer sooner and avoid unnecessary tests.

Routine blood tests are a staple of medical checkups, but new research from the University of Oxford suggests they could do more than confirm what’s already suspected. By looking at how blood test results shift over time, doctors may be able to spot cancer before symptoms show up—even when each individual result still falls within the normal range.

Traditionally, doctors have focused on single abnormal results to raise the alarm. The Oxford team took a different approach. They studied records from over 275,000 people who saw their doctor for unexplained weight loss. Within six months, nearly 14,000 of them were diagnosed with cancer. By tracking changes in common blood markers, the researchers found 23 patterns that were strongly linked to later cancer diagnoses.

The Oxford study evaluated trends across 26 different standard blood tests, not just a handful of markers.

The study, published in 'PLOS Medicine', found that the direction and pace of change in blood markers mattered more than whether a single value was out of range. After adjusting for age and sex, the team saw that gradual shifts in white blood cell and neutrophil counts often pointed to lung cancer. Changes in red blood cell volume, haematocrit, or the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio were tied to a higher risk of prostate cancer.

This method doesn’t require new machines or expensive upgrades. The Oxford researchers say that simple calculations, already possible in most labs, could make this kind of screening widely available. It could help primary care doctors decide which patients with vague symptoms—like unexplained weight loss—should be sent for more advanced tests such as CT scans or endoscopies.

Unintentional weight loss is a classic example of a symptom that’s hard to pin down. Doctors often have to choose between ordering costly, invasive tests or risking a missed diagnosis. The new findings suggest that watching blood test trends could help avoid both unnecessary procedures and late cancer detection.

According to the study published on 17 September 2026 in PLOS Medicine, some dynamic changes in blood test results were found to be more informative for cancer risk than single abnormal values, offering a practical way to improve early detection without the need for new laboratory equipment.

The Oxford group plans to look beyond weight loss. Next, they’ll study whether similar blood test patterns can help spot cancer in people with other common but vague symptoms, such as fatigue or vomiting. If so, routine blood tests could become a kind of ongoing health record, not just a one-off check.

Turning routine blood analysis into a timeline, rather than a snapshot, could change how primary care handles cancer risk. Since this approach uses information already collected in standard practice, it offers a practical way to catch cancer earlier and more accurately—potentially improving outcomes for thousands of patients each year. The evidence so far suggests that the future of cancer screening may depend less on new tests and more on how we read the ones we already have.

While the Oxford study focused on the UK, its findings are relevant across Europe, including Spain, where early cancer detection is a public health priority. Bringing trend analysis into everyday practice could help Spanish doctors find high-risk patients sooner, especially in busy clinics where resources are tight and unnecessary testing is a concern. Shifting from static to dynamic blood test interpretation could make cancer screening more targeted and personal, and help address one of healthcare’s toughest challenges.
