Emergency services were called to Vilassar de Mar’s Palomares beach Thursday morning, where a woman’s body had been found. The Mossos d’Esquadra, Catalonia’s police, opened an investigation. Several independent reports put the call at between 09:45 and 09:55.
Police told La Vanguardia that people who spotted someone motionless on the shore made the first call. It was early on a workday, and the beach was nearly empty, with most locals yet to arrive.
Officers have not released the woman’s name or details about what happened before her death. Regional outlets Capgros and El Caso reported that she was about 70 years old, but police have not confirmed her identity.
The beach is close to Cabrera de Mar. The area is known as both Palomares and Almadrava beach, names for the same stretch beside the old Palomares restaurant. On Thursday morning, only police and a few onlookers were there.
Police sources cited by several publications said the death was likely accidental or due to natural causes, with no foul play suspected. The autopsy results and official cause of death had not been released at the time of publication. El Caso reported that the Mossos d’Esquadra were awaiting forensic conclusions before making final statements about the incident.
