A bus carrying 55 passengers crashed into a building on Rambla de Ferran in Lleida at about 07:15 on Wednesday, 1 July 2026, injuring 46 people, including four reported in critical condition. The bus was travelling toward Pont Vell before abruptly changing direction, entering a pedestrian area and striking the building. The precise cause remains under investigation.
The passengers were travelling on an internal route from Lleida toward La Granja d’Escarp, serving municipalities in the Baix Segre area. The route included stops at Alcarràs, Soses, Aitona, Seròs and Massalcoreig. Many passengers were seasonal agricultural workers travelling for the Segrià fruit harvest. Lleida mayor Fèlix Larrosa said the driver had recently joined the transport company and was accompanied by an instructor, who was among the most seriously injured.
The emergency response included 11 medical units, a medical helicopter and psychological-support personnel. Most injured passengers were taken to Hospital Universitari Arnau de Vilanova de Lleida; those with minor injuries were treated at local health centres or released at the scene. Firefighters deployed 14 teams to evacuate passengers and secure the area. Civil Protection of the Generalitat activated the Procicat emergency plan at alert level to coordinate the response.
Emergency-service figures listed four people in critical condition, seven seriously injured and 32 with minor injuries. The bus company Gamón removed the wreckage during the morning, allowing traffic to resume. A nearby-camera recording reportedly showed the bus travelling along Rambla de Ferran before changing direction and entering the pedestrian zone. The footage documents the sequence of events but does not establish why the vehicle veered off course.
Joan Josep Bellostas, head of the Lleida emergency region for Bombers de la Generalitat, said it was “too early to determine the exact cause” as the investigation continued. Larrosa also reported that the driver had recently been hired and was accompanied by an instructor. A Romanian citizen was among those seriously injured, Romania’s Foreign Ministry confirmed; the instructor was also identified as Romanian.
Generalitat President Salvador Illa and Parliament President Josep Rull expressed support for the injured and their families. Illa contacted Larrosa after the collision, while Rull and other parliamentary figures thanked emergency and security services for their work.
The crash comes amid heightened attention to road safety in Spain following fatal collisions in other regions. In a separate incident, seven people lost their lives in overnight road accidents in Castellón and Málaga.
Spain’s agricultural sector relies heavily on seasonal labour, with workers travelling during harvest periods. In Lleida, the bus was carrying passengers on a route linking the city with towns in the Baix Segre area. The investigation into the collision is ongoing.
