The incident occurred around 07:15, prompting a large-scale emergency response and raising questions about the circumstances leading to the collision.
The bus, which was transporting 55 passengers along a route through Baix Segre municipalities, struck the building for reasons still under investigation. According to the Sistema de Emergencias Médicas (SEM), eleven medical units, a medical helicopter, and a team of psychologists were dispatched to the scene. The majority of the injured were taken to Hospital Arnau de Vilanova de Lleida, while others with minor injuries received treatment at local primary care centers or were discharged at the site.
Firefighters deployed fourteen teams to evacuate passengers, secure the area, and assist medical personnel. Civil Protection of the Generalitat activated the Procicat emergency plan at alert level. By midday, the bus company Gamón had removed the wreckage from the street, allowing traffic to resume. The bus had begun its journey in Lleida, making stops in Alcarràs, Soses, Aitona, Seròs, Massalcoreig, and La Granja d'Escarp. Most passengers were temporary agricultural workers heading to the Segrià region for the fruit harvest, as confirmed by Lleida's mayor, Fèlix Larrosa.
Initial findings suggest the driver, recently hired by the transport company, may have lost control of the vehicle. She was accompanied by an instructor, who is among the most seriously injured. Joan Josep Bellostas, head of the Lleida emergency region for the fire service, emphasized that it is too early to determine the exact cause, but the investigation is ongoing.
Political leaders, including Generalitat president Salvador Illa and Parliament president Josep Rull, expressed support for the injured and their families. Illa contacted the mayor of Lleida shortly after the incident, while Rull and other parliamentary figures publicly thanked emergency and security services for their efforts. The SEM later updated the casualty figures to 46 injured: 4 critical, 7 serious, and 32 with minor injuries.
