BYD has launched the M9, a luxury plug-in hybrid van with up to 145 kilometers of electric range and seating for seven or eight. The M9 undercuts rivals on price and brings advanced tech to Australian families and business fleets.

BYD has entered Australia’s high-end people-mover market with the M9, a luxury plug-in hybrid van that offers up to 145 kilometers of electric-only range and a total driving distance of 850 kilometers. The M9 goes straight after established premium models, but comes in at a much lower price.

The van is 5.14 meters long and comes in both seven- and eight-seat versions. BYD is pitching it to families and executive fleets. The exterior design borrows from traditional Chinese gardens, with strong horizontal and vertical lines and a front end shaped to look like a dragon. Inside, comfort is front and center. The M9 Premium has heated and ventilated front seats. The second row gets individual seats with heating, ventilation, and a near zero-gravity recline. Even with every seat in use, there’s a 470-liter luggage area. The van can tow up to 1,500 kg with brakes, adding more flexibility.

The M9 will be the first people-mover from BYD to launch in Australia, with the Premium variant set to arrive before the more affordable Dynamic version.

Under the bonnet, the M9 uses BYD’s DM-i 5.0 hybrid system. It pairs a 1.5-liter turbo petrol engine with an electric motor. The Premium model comes with a 36.60 kWh BYD Blade battery, giving up to 145 kilometers of electric range and 850 kilometers total on a full charge and tank, based on WLTP standards. The Dynamic version has a smaller 20.39 kWh battery, so its electric range is shorter, but it keeps the focus on efficiency. Both models support AC and DC charging and have vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability for powering external devices.

The M9 packs in plenty of tech. The dashboard has a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen. There’s wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, over-the-air updates, and four-zone voice control. The van also has an integrated fridge and thermal compartment, which can cool from -6 to 6 degrees or heat from 35 to 50 degrees. Augmented reality projection tech gives easy access to the electric sliding doors and tailgate.

BYD has put safety high on the list. The M9’s body is made from 73% high-strength steel. It comes with up to nine airbags, a 360-degree camera system, five millimeter-wave radars, eight ultrasonic sensors, and a full set of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

According to leading Australian automotive outlets, the M9 is scheduled for local release between October and December 2026, with the Premium model arriving first and the Dynamic following later. This timeline positions BYD to directly compete with established players like the Kia Carnival in both family and corporate markets.

Price is where the M9 stands out. The eight-seat M9 Dynamic starts at 61,990 Australian dollars (about 38,463 euros). The seven-seat M9 Premium starts at 72,990 Australian dollars (around 45,300 euros). This pricing puts the M9 well below many rivals. Reports from carsales.com.au and other industry sources say BYD’s prices undercut most established competitors, making the M9 a strong option for buyers looking for value.

BYD’s growth has been fast. The M9 is the seventh new model the company has launched in just twelve months, each aimed at a different market segment. Stephen Collins, BYD Australia’s chief operating officer, said the M9 shows the brand’s push to deliver top electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to Australians, as he told local media.

For those watching Chinese electric vehicles, the M9’s launch comes soon after the Denza Z9S, which set new range records in the luxury EV market. The M9’s arrival is another step in BYD’s plan to reach more buyers and change what people expect from premium transport.

With its advanced tech, long electric range, and sharp pricing, the BYD M9 is set to shake up the market and speed up the move to electric family and executive vans. BYD’s push to innovate and cut prices could change the game for luxury vans—not just in Australia, but anywhere buyers want value and efficiency over old-school prestige.
