Spain Broadens Listeria Alert Over Carrefour Salmon. Spanish authorities have announced an expanded recall of Carrefour salmon due to Listeria monocytogenes. Additional batches of the product are now at risk. It is advised not to consume salmon with certain dates and batch numbers.
Spain is tightening its control over food safety: The Food Safety and Nutrition Agency (Aesan) has announced an expanded list of batches of Carrefour brand salmon found to contain the dangerous pathogen Listeria monocytogenes. The new warning applies to batch 361614 with an expiration date of 09/04/2026, which has already begun to be withdrawn from stores following notification from Andalusia's health authorities.
Previously, batch 361214 of the same product was subject to a similar measure, which Aesan reported on April 1. Now other brands have been added to the list: Skandia and Gourmet, which also sell 'Norwegian Smoked Salmon' in plastic blister packs with batch number 361214 and expiration dates of 10/04/2026 and 13/04/2026. According to the agency, all products were distributed almost nationwide.
Information about the risk was promptly transmitted to regional authorities through the Sciri system to accelerate the withdrawal of hazardous products from retail chains. Aesan emphasizes that if you have salmon from the specified batches at home, it should not be consumed. If symptoms typical of listeriosis—such as vomiting, diarrhea, or fever—occur, it is recommended to seek medical attention immediately. Separate guidelines on nutrition and hygiene apply to pregnant women to reduce the risk of infection.
In recent years, cases of Listeria monocytogenes detected in food products in Spain have not been uncommon. This bacterium is especially dangerous for pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. Listeriosis outbreaks can lead to serious health consequences, and food quality control remains a top priority for health authorities. It is important to note that similar measures to withdraw hazardous goods have already been taken in other areas: for example, police recently seized a large amount of cash from an inspector linked to a criminal network, which also drew public attention (details of the high-profile seizure).
According to experts, Listeria monocytogenes can persist even at low temperatures, which makes smoked fish and other chilled products a high-risk zone. Spain has strict regulations for monitoring such cases, and consumers are advised to pay close attention to labeling and expiration dates on packaging.
