From 2026, the ITV schedule attributed to Spain’s Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) distinguishes between motorhomes and camper vans by the vehicle’s technical classification and age. That distinction matters to owners of converted vans: a vehicle used for leisure may face a different inspection timetable from a motorhome with a similar interior if their technical classifications differ.
Under the reported schedule, category M motorhomes are exempt from ITV during their first four years. After that, they are inspected every two years through age ten, then annually once they are more than ten years old. Category N camper vans, including “furgones vivienda,” are inspected annually until they are ten years old and every six months thereafter. For a category N vehicle over ten years old, that means two inspections a year, compared with one for a category M motorhome of the same age.
The determining detail is the classification recorded on the vehicle’s technical inspection card, known as the tarjeta ITV, not its commercial name or how its owner uses it. Why Vehicle Category Matters

Its appearance or use as a camper does not by itself determine its ITV interval.

Owners planning trips or estimating maintenance costs should account for the vehicle’s recorded category and age. Category M motorhomes over ten years old follow an annual schedule.
The difference also matters when buying or converting a vehicle: habitation equipment does not necessarily change its technical category. The classification recorded after any relevant homologation process determines which inspection interval applies.
