Spain is under heightened weather vigilance as eleven autonomous communities have been placed on alert for either severe storms or soaring temperatures. The State Meteorological Agency has activated yellow warnings across much of the country, with the most acute risks concentrated in the northwest and the interior.
According to RTVE.es, the most significant instability is expected in Galicia, the northwest of Castilla y León, and the Cantabrian mountain range, where heavy showers and thunderstorms are forecast. These adverse conditions may also extend to parts of the northern plateau, Extremadura, the Pyrenees, and the northern Iberian system, raising concerns about localized flooding and hazardous travel.
Seven regions—Andalucía, Aragón, Cataluña, Extremadura, Madrid, Navarra, and La Rioja—are under alert for high temperatures. In these areas, maximum temperatures are set to climb above 35–36°C in the southwest, reach 36–38°C in the Ebro valley, and could approach 40°C in the valleys of the Guadiana and Guadalquivir rivers. Meanwhile, Asturias, Cantabria, and Galicia are facing warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms, while three provinces in Castilla y León—León, Palencia, and Zamora—are specifically on alert for storms, with the possibility of hail not ruled out.
Nighttime conditions are also expected to be challenging in the southwest and along the Mediterranean coast, where so-called 'tropical nights' will keep minimum temperatures above 20°C. This persistent heat may impact sleep quality and increase health risks for vulnerable groups.
Winds will generally be light and from the east in the eastern third of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, while variable breezes are forecast for the central plateaus. In the Canary Islands, trade winds will blow at light to moderate strength. These wind patterns may influence the development and movement of storm systems, particularly in the north and northwest.
