Iván Fernández never faded quietly. The former Vuelo 505 drummer faced esclerosis lateral amiotrófica head-on. He refused to let the illness silence him. At 45, his death leaves a hole in the Riojan music world and among those pushing for ELA patients’ rights in Spain.
When the disease forced him off the stage, Fernández did not disappear. He helped launch VencELA Rioja in October 2022. Until then, La Rioja had no group for ELA patients. He spoke plainly: “The association arises from the needs we have as patients, from the treatments we require, the constant psychological support, and everything that public healthcare does not provide.” For him, this was about survival, not charity.
According to estimates by the Spanish Society of Neurology, there are about 4,000–4,500 people living with ELA in Spain, with around 900 new cases diagnosed each year.
His work was urgent. Fernández, a father, prepared his own farewell. He left a message for family, friends, and fans: “Life has been wonderful, but my time here has ended and my journey to new horizons has begun. To those who remain, stop worrying about nonsense and make the most of every day as if it were your last.” He did not dodge hard topics. He spoke openly about euthanasia and the choices patients face.
His old bandmates mourned him in a message: “Today you have gone to your planet and we already miss you. Thank you for choosing us to share your life. You know that in this band we will always be five. We love you, brother, let your drums resonate.”
Fernández’s story is not rare. Spain still struggles to support people with rare diseases. Other high-profile cases have shown the same gaps in care and recognition. His activism forced La Rioja to face what it had ignored. He showed where public health support falls short. He pushed for patient-led change.
Recent reports highlight that support for ELA patients in Spain varies significantly by region, with some autonomous communities still facing delays and disputes over financial aid and assistance.
