The family has scheduled a farewell ceremony for 16:30 on Wednesday 11 November at the Montoie funeral centre in Lausanne. Josep Tarradellas i Macià died in the Swiss city on Friday, 6 November 2026, aged 84, his family said in a statement reported by Europa Press on Saturday and reproduced by EFE. The family described him as a much-loved husband and father; he was also a grandfather, and had lived in Lausanne.

Born in Saint-Raphaël, France, in 1942, he was the son of Josep Tarradellas, the former president of the Generalitat who remained in exile after the Spanish Civil War and died in 1988, and Maria Antònia Macià, who died in 2001. His sister Montserrat died in 1984. Tarradellas i Macià grew up alongside his father during exile; biographer Joan Esculies described that upbringing as one spent in a difficult exile.

EFE reported that Tarradellas i Macià was a scientist and professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. After his parents’ deaths, he became involved in the governing body of the Montserrat Tarradellas i Macià Archive, named after his sister, helping preserve and promote documentary material relating to his father.

Salvador Illa praised Tarradellas i Macià’s work as a respected scientist and his discreet role in preserving his father’s legacy. The president of the Generalitat posted the tribute on X, calling Josep Tarradellas’s legacy essential to understanding contemporary Catalonia and sending his affection to the family.

Former president Pere Aragonès also paid tribute on X, saying the family’s history reflected a Generalitat that had remained standing and served the people of Catalunya. The PSC expressed its condolences on the platform and noted Tarradellas i Macià’s connection to Catalonia’s history and the preservation of his father’s legacy.
