Level will remove its direct Barcelona to Boston and Barcelona to Los Angeles flights from its winter 2026-2027 schedule, beginning 25 October, when the winter timetable takes effect. La Vanguardia first reported the decision, which El Periódico subsequently covered. It follows earlier reductions in the airline’s US-bound flying and leaves Barcelona with fewer nonstop transatlantic options during winter.
Level attributed the change to operational efficiency, saying it would concentrate capacity on routes with “more stable demand throughout the year, less seasonality and stronger profitability,” particularly in markets with greater growth potential. The airline has described the move as a seasonal network adjustment. It does not, by itself, mean every affected destination has been permanently abandoned.
The Boston and Los Angeles changes are part of a wider reassessment of Level’s Barcelona to United States network. The airline had already removed Barcelona to San Francisco from its summer schedule, with reporting linking the suspension to an aircraft-engine shortage. Earlier summer adjustments also reduced service to Boston and New York, with Los Angeles affected as well, extending the shift beyond a single route or season.
Separate changes are scheduled for the following winter on Barcelona to New York JFK and Barcelona to Miami. AeroRoutes reported that both services had been scheduled at three weekly frequencies. New York flights were due to pause from 19 January to 15 March 2027, while Miami flights were scheduled to stop from 21 January to 28 February. Level called those interruptions part of its regular network review and said the routes had not been cancelled. For affected bookings, the airline cited a full refund or a voucher for future travel, and also offered rebooking on another carrier. It said it would contact affected customers proactively.
The network changes are not uniform across the Americas. Level has also announced a fourth weekly Barcelona to Lima frequency for 2027, pointing to a selective reallocation of capacity rather than a blanket retreat from long-haul flying. The company says its adjustments respond to changing demand and prioritize routes it considers more dependable and profitable.
Launched in 2017 under the International Airlines Group (IAG) umbrella, which also includes British Airways and Iberia, Level was created to maintain IAG’s competitive position at Barcelona’s El Prat Airport without disrupting Iberia’s operations at Madrid-Barajas. Vueling is also part of IAG. Iberia continues to provide aircraft and crew for Level’s flights, enabling the brand to operate long-haul services from Barcelona.
The changes show the challenge airlines face in balancing route profitability with seasonal swings in international demand. El Prat is a major gateway for transatlantic travel from Spain, but fewer Level flights to Boston and Los Angeles mean travelers between Catalonia and those cities have fewer direct options during the winter schedule. Other routes, including the later temporary interruptions for New York and Miami, have their own scheduled operating windows and should be distinguished from the removal of Boston and Los Angeles from the winter timetable.
Spain’s aviation sector continues to adapt as carriers respond to changing market conditions and competition from traditional and low-cost operators. Level’s schedule decisions may affect business and leisure travelers, while reflecting a wider industry focus on matching capacity to demand and concentrating resources on routes with stronger year-round prospects.
