Nearly 50 young endocrinology specialists met in Madrid for the first Emerging Experts programme. The training focused on chronic hypoparathyroidism, a rare disease estimated to affect around 13,000 people in Spain.

Around 13,000 people in Spain are estimated to live with chronic hypoparathyroidism, according to figures also reported by Las Provincias. The estimate has not been linked to a national registry or an official epidemiological publication.

That disease was the focus of the first Emerging Experts programme in Madrid, where nearly 50 residents and young consultants in Endocrinology and Nutrition met to discuss clinical cases and specialist training. The programme brought younger doctors together with colleagues who have spent longer in the field.

Hypoparathyroidism is linked to a deficiency of parathyroid hormone, which helps regulate calcium and phosphate through its effects on the bones, kidneys and intestine.

Ascendis Pharma Iberia organised the meeting. Europa Press described it as the company's first educational project for young endocrinologists on chronic hypoparathyroidism. The format combined scientific discussion, clinical case analysis and professional exchange between doctors at different stages of their careers.

The intergenerational format is the programme's clearest feature. Senior specialists worked alongside younger endocrinologists and residents. Instead of relying on lectures alone, the sessions gave participants room to compare clinical experience through case-based discussion.

Alongside traditional treatment with calcium and active forms of vitamin D, YORVIPATH is an approved option in the United States, the European Union, the European Economic Area and several other jurisdictions for adults with hypoparathyroidism. Its use makes monitoring calcium, phosphate, kidney function and potential complications an important part of specialist preparation.

For younger doctors, the value of the meeting came from direct contact with colleagues who have built longer careers in endocrinology. Experienced specialists, in turn, took part in developing doctors who may later manage rare and complex diseases. The available source material does not name individual speakers or describe the cases discussed.

The condition requires more than keeping a calcium result within range. Hypoparathyroidism can be linked to neuromuscular excitability, kidney complications, extraskeletal calcifications and cognitive difficulties. Doctors may need to track several organ systems over time, and hormone-based treatment options have added to the need for careful long-term monitoring.

Treatment can require checks on calcium, phosphate, kidney function and possible complications.

Emerging Experts is intended to continue and support new generations of endocrinologists. That is the organiser's stated plan, not a confirmed long-term result. Available independent reports do not provide an official assessment of learning outcomes or show whether the programme has changed clinical practice.

The programme's public-health relevance rests on the number of people affected and the disease's reach across several organs. The estimated 13,000 patients in Spain make specialist preparation a practical concern, even though chronic hypoparathyroidism is encountered less often than common endocrine disorders.

Ascendis has also reported a long-term analysis from the PaTH Forward and PaTHway studies. The analysis examines palopegteriparatide in relation to bone mineral density and a measure of bone structure, with the results announced for presentation at ASBMR 2026. This is company-reported information and has not yet been assessed in an independent publication.

Those findings are separate from the Madrid meeting. The initiative does not announce a new treatment or a change in medical policy. Its stated purpose is to build a continuing training channel around chronic hypoparathyroidism through direct exchange between senior and young clinicians.
