Mercedes has unveiled its latest GLA, boasting up to 657 km of electric range and a strikingly advanced interior. The new model aims to outpace both established European brands and fast-rising Chinese competitors.

Mercedes has raised the stakes in the compact SUV segment with the debut of its new GLA, a model that combines bold design changes, a fully electrified powertrain lineup, and a technology-rich interior. The German automaker is positioning this GLA as a direct challenge not only to traditional rivals like BMW and Audi, but also to the wave of Chinese brands making inroads into Europe’s premium market.

The exterior of the new GLA is noticeably more athletic than its predecessor. Mercedes engineers have lowered the body by 20 millimeters, extended the wheelbase by 61 millimeters, and widened the rear track by 31 millimeters. These subtle adjustments, paired with muscular shoulders and flush-fitting wheels ranging from 18 to 20 inches, give the SUV a more planted and dynamic stance.

One of the most eye-catching features is the illuminated grille, a first for a compact electric Mercedes. The grille incorporates a smoked glass effect and up to 608 LED points, capable of animated welcome sequences depending on market and trim. LED headlights, standard across the range, feature the Mercedes star as a design element, while optional MULTIBEAM LED units add distinctive daytime running lights and further lighting animations. At the rear, a horizontal light bar visually widens the vehicle.

Customization options have expanded, with four trim lines—Style, Progressive, AMG Line, and AMG Line Plus—plus a Night Edition featuring gloss black accents and exclusive 20-inch wheels. New exterior colors and interior trims allow buyers to tailor the GLA to their preferences.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the GLA makes a strong impression with its sense of space and technology. The highlight is the MBUX Superscreen, which stretches across the dashboard and integrates three displays: a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14-inch central touchscreen, and a 14-inch passenger display for streaming entertainment. The steering wheel features quick-access buttons for frequently used functions, and the quality of materials and seating comfort reflect Mercedes’ premium ambitions.

Thanks to the longer wheelbase, interior space has grown. Front occupants gain 7 mm of extra legroom, while rear passengers benefit from an additional 38 mm. Headroom is improved throughout, aided by a standard panoramic roof. The boot now offers 410 liters of capacity—70 liters more than before—and expands to 1,400 liters with the rear seats folded. Electric versions add a 107-liter front trunk for extra storage.

On the tech front, the latest MBUX system introduces a virtual assistant powered by artificial intelligence, blending ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing, and Google Gemini technologies. This assistant can handle natural conversations, answer complex queries, and assist with navigation and entertainment.

Electric Powertrains and Performance

The new GLA launches with three fully electric variants. The entry-level GLA 200 electric delivers 165 kW (around 224 hp) and uses a 58 kWh LFP battery. The GLA 250+ electric steps up to 200 kW (272 hp) with an 85 kWh NMC battery, while the flagship GLA 350 4MATIC electric offers 260 kW (354 hp), all-wheel drive, and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds.

Official WLTP range peaks at 657 kilometers, placing the GLA among the leaders in its class. Thanks to its 800-volt electrical architecture, the SUV can add up to 270 kilometers of range in just ten minutes at ultra-fast charging stations rated up to 320 kW.

For those not ready to go fully electric, Mercedes will introduce electrified combustion engines in early 2027. These will feature a new 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system and an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The integrated electric motor provides up to 22 kW of additional power, enabling short bursts of electric-only driving and energy recuperation in all gears.

Market Position and Competition

The GLA’s arrival comes at a time when the premium compact SUV segment is more competitive than ever. While Mercedes has long vied with BMW, Audi, and Porsche, the rapid ascent of Chinese brands such as Exlantis and Zeekr has forced established players to accelerate innovation. The GLA’s blend of range, technology, and luxury is designed to keep Mercedes at the forefront, especially as new entrants target the same customer base. This competitive landscape is also reflected in the broader electric SUV market, where models like the BYD Atto 2 are gaining traction with Spanish buyers, as seen in this recent analysis of the BYD Atto 2’s appeal.

The first units of the new GLA are expected to reach Spanish dealerships in the third quarter of this year, with prices for the base electric model starting at €54,000. As the market shifts rapidly toward electrification, Mercedes’ latest move signals both confidence and urgency in defending its position against both established and emerging rivals.

For context, the GLA’s 657 km range places it ahead of many direct competitors in the segment. The integration of advanced AI in the infotainment system is also a notable step, as premium brands increasingly compete on digital experience as much as on driving dynamics. The addition of a front trunk in electric versions and the expanded boot capacity reflect a growing focus on practicality, while the upcoming hybrid options suggest Mercedes is hedging its bets as the Spanish market transitions toward full electrification.
