La Rioja launches payments of up to €12,800 for parental leave. The authorities of La Rioja have opened applications for significant payments to private sector employees who decide to take parental leave. The amount can reach €12,800, and for some families—even more.

In La Rioja, a financial support program has been launched for parents who temporarily leave work to care for children. Under the new measure, private sector employees can receive up to 350 euros per month, with the total amount of support during the parental leave period reaching up to 12,800 euros per person.

Regional authorities emphasize that the initiative aims to help families balance work and childcare, especially as the cost of living continues to rise. However, not everyone will be eligible for the program: to receive payments, applicants must have a permanent employment contract (full- or part-time) and have worked at the company for at least one year. Another mandatory condition is residing in La Rioja for at least six months prior to the start of the leave.

Who is eligible for the support

The program is available only to private sector employees who have taken parental leave. If both parents choose to exercise this right, only one of them can receive the subsidy—it is important to determine in advance which family member meets all the criteria.

Family income and additional payments

The payment amount depends on the family's income. For most families, there is a limit — no more than €60,000 per year. For large families, this threshold is increased to €70,000, and for single-parent families to €35,000 (or €40,000 if the family is both large and single-parent). Large and single-parent families can receive 25% more than the standard amount. In the case of twins or triplets, the benefit is granted for each child, but for no more than two children.

How to apply

Applications are accepted only online via La Rioja Government Electronic Services Website. Documents must be submitted within a month after registering for leave. The authorities are required by law to make a decision on the benefit within six months.

Context and significance

The introduction of such programs reflects the growing demand for support for families with children in Spain. New measures aimed at easing the financial burden on parents are being implemented in different regions of the country. For example, Madrid recently began accepting applications for subsidies to employers hiring young professionals — more about this initiative can be found in the article on youth employment subsidies.

In La Rioja, the authorities are focusing on direct support for families to ensure that parents can not only keep their jobs but also avoid losing income during child care leave. This policy may serve as an example for other regions where balancing work and family responsibilities remains an important issue.
