On Avenida de las Américas, the ‘playa de Parla’ has quietly become one of Madrid’s most distinctive summer escapes. Opened on June 13, 2006, this saltwater pool complex was conceived as an alternative to traditional municipal pools, offering a beach-like experience without leaving the city. Two decades later, it remains a magnet for locals and visitors from neighboring towns alike.
Spanning more than 35,000 square meters, the facility features a main saltwater pool surrounded by sand, designed to evoke the feel of a real beach. The site also includes a children’s pool, an adult swimming area, expansive green lawns, picnic spots, a restaurant, and a large slide that remains especially popular with younger guests. The 2026 summer season began on June 13 and will run through August 30, with daily hours from 10:00 to 21:00.
According to Javier González, Parla’s sports councilor, the original layout has changed little since its inauguration. However, recent improvements include a new accessible pathway to the main pool, making it easier for seniors and wheelchair users to enjoy the facilities. This focus on accessibility has helped the complex maintain its broad appeal.
Unusual Beginnings
The story of the ‘playa de Parla’ includes its share of quirks. Before the official opening, some grassy areas on the hillside failed to take root in time for the media launch. As González recalled in an interview with SER Madrid Sur, staff used a special green paint to cover the bare patches, ensuring the grounds looked lush for the event. The improvised solution went largely unnoticed by attendees and has since become a lighthearted part of the pool’s history.
Record Attendance and Pricing Changes
Attendance figures underscore the site’s enduring popularity. In 2025, nearly 90,000 people visited the ‘playa de Parla’, confirming its status as a leading leisure option during Madrid’s hottest months. Last year, the city council introduced a significant change: ticket prices were reduced and standardized for all users, regardless of whether they were Parla residents. The move eliminated previous price differences based on residency, a decision the local government linked to potential legal concerns over discriminatory pricing.
Ongoing Upgrades Across Parla
Beyond the urban beach, Parla’s sports department is planning further upgrades to local facilities. At the Francisco Javier Castillejo sports center, work is scheduled to improve outdoor courts, add covers to two of them, and convert four existing padel courts into tennis courts. The city also aims to renovate the pool at this complex and build a new athletics track in the Parque de las Comunidades.
As the ‘playa de Parla’ enters its third decade, its blend of accessibility, unique design, and inclusive pricing continues to set it apart among Madrid’s summer destinations. The site’s evolution reflects both the city’s commitment to public leisure and the changing expectations of its residents.
