NATO Chief Urges Europe to Boost Involvement in US Operation Against Iran. The US is deploying 5,000 troops to Poland. The NATO chief is calling on Europe to demonstrate greater autonomy and support for the operation against Iran. Spain has refused to make its bases available for logistics.
The United States is officially deploying 5,000 of its troops to Poland, marking a key development at the meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Helsingborg, Sweden. Alliance Secretary General Mark Rutte welcomed the move but emphasized that Europe needs to more actively strengthen its own defense and reduce dependence on Washington. According to him, NATO's current course is aimed at building a stronger Europe and an alliance where each country assumes greater responsibility.
Rutte specifically noted that European states have already provided significant logistical support to the US during the operation against Iran. However, he called on allies not to stop there and to join the next phase of the American campaign in the region. In particular, this involves assistance in ensuring freedom of navigation in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, where the situation remains tense and maritime traffic is still difficult.
Despite overall support, not all countries agreed to provide their resources. As Rutte points out, Spain refused in March to allow the use of the Rota and Morón bases for American logistics. At the same time, Italy, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany opened their military facilities for US needs, and some allies deployed ships and equipment closer to the conflict zone.
Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand stated that Ottawa is focused on supporting Gulf countries and ensuring the security of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Canada is closely cooperating with the UK and France coalition and is ready to provide expertise in demining and cybersecurity after a sustainable ceasefire is reached.
Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard acknowledged that the United States was disappointed by insufficient coordination with European partners but assured that in the next phase of the operation, Sweden is ready to contribute to ensuring freedom of navigation, which aligns with the country's national interests. Recall that Sweden joined NATO two years ago and is hosting the alliance ministers' meeting this time.
Issues of coordination among allies and the distribution of military burden are becoming increasingly relevant amid new challenges for Europe.
