The Javis have done something audacious with Federico García Lorca: they have made him write after his death. La bola negra is not a standard film about the poet. It tries to continue an unfinished work through the lives of people caught between desire and fear. Its central tension appears in a warning Lorca once refused to follow: stay in Madrid and do not go to Granada.
That choice sets the film on its fatal course. The characters know danger is coming, but they move toward it anyway. Lorca's protagonists do the same in Bodas de sangre, La casa de Bernarda Alba and Yerma. The audience can already see the drop ahead.
