Soria’s rural region saw an unprecedented jump in tourism this August, with visitor numbers setting new records. The province’s 16 official tourism offices handled 55,425 queries, a 25% increase over August 2025. The rare total solar eclipse played a major role, drawing fresh attention to the area and changing travel patterns across Spain.
Madrid residents made up the largest group of visitors, with 10,956 arrivals. They were followed by travelers from Castilla y León and Catalonia, as well as Aragón and the Comunidad Valenciana. International visits also rose: 1,419 tourists came from France, while others arrived from the United Kingdom and the United States, along with several Latin American countries. In total, 4,066 international tourists were counted in August.
The eclipse did more than fill hotels for a weekend. It brought thousands of new visitors to Soria’s villages and landscapes, as well as historic sites many had never considered before. The province’s appeal lies in its quiet towns and open countryside, with a slower pace far from Spain’s crowded beaches.
Berlanga de Duero was the busiest tourism office, handling 9,160 queries. Ágreda and El Burgo de Osma each recorded more than 6,000 consultations, as did Almazán. Even smaller towns such as Medinaceli and Ólvega, along with San Leonardo de Yagüe, reported much higher activity than usual for the summer.
The data points to a clear shift: Soria is attracting more than locals returning to family villages. Its visitor base is broader and more adventurous, with many seeking alternatives to mass tourism. Elia Giménez, the provincial tourism official, said the numbers confirm that Soria’s rural offerings are reaching Spanish and international travelers looking for genuine experiences.

Year-to-date figures support the trend. From January to August, Soria’s tourism offices processed 209,970 queries, up 10.69% from the same period in 2025. The province has recovered from the pandemic’s impact on travel and surpassed all post-COVID records. Visitors are also arriving from a wider range of places, with new expectations.
The increase is bringing more customers to local businesses, including shops and restaurants. Hotels are seeing the benefit, too. This matters especially for villages that often face population decline and slow seasons. The eclipse sparked the surge, while continued growth points to a deeper change in how Spaniards and foreign visitors view rural destinations.
Soria’s recent success shows that authenticity and room to explore draw visitors, alongside the province’s local character. The rare astronomical event has given fresh momentum to Soria’s natural appeal and the work of local authorities. Continued growth could make the province a model for rural tourism in Spain, showing how quiet regions can attract national attention when an chance arises.
