The 1966 E10 was 3.85 metres long; the 2026 Corolla Hatchback is about 4.37 metres. The modern five-door is roughly 52 centimetres longer and 30 centimetres wider; its wheelbase is 35 centimetres greater.
Across 12 generations, the Corolla has sold 57 million units worldwide, a total no other car has reached under the same name. Toyota introduced the first model during a period of economic growth in Japan, aiming to build an affordable car with useful equipment. It was also meant to be comfortable and pleasant to lead. Toyota España has described the Corolla as a 60-year-old nameplate, marking six decades of the model’s history.
The E10 used a 1.1-litre petrol engine producing 60 hp. Its compact, light body made that modest output sufficient for the car. The 1966 model had no seatbelts.
During the reported back-to-back lead, the old car’s worn carpet and hard plastic showed its age, but its controls remained reassuringly sound: the gears shifted smoothly and the steering had no slack that needed correction. The account describes a car that had been repaired, not given an immaculate museum restoration.
The Corolla also developed a sporting following. Coupé versions such as the Levin and AE86 brought rear-wheel lead and a front-mounted engine to an affordable car, earning a place in Japanese popular culture through rallying and circuit racing.
Toyota began official sales in Spain in 1997 with the eighth-generation E110, launched globally in 1995. Toyota España dates its operation in the country to 1997. The E110’s rounded headlamps marked a sharp design departure. Carlos Sainz drove the model in the World Rally Championship in 1998, when he finished runner-up, and again in 1999.
In Europe, Toyota temporarily replaced the Corolla name with Auris for its compact model. Hybrid technology gained ground, and since the Corolla name returned in 2019 the model has been offered with hybrid power alone. Toyota España has reported that Toyota and Lexus together have sold more than 25 million electrified vehicles worldwide and more than half a million electrified units in Spain since 1997. Those figures cover the two brands’ wider electrified line-up. A separate compact-car hybrid plan is covered in Hyundai’s Bayon update.
Toyota Motor Corporation publishes monthly sales results. Its releases also cover production and export figures, alongside cumulative fiscal-year totals. The FY2027 first-half announcement, published on October 29, 2026, covered September results and the cumulative period from April through September.
