At sunrise on June 29, Málaga’s port became the stage for a maritime spectacle as the ‘Legend of the Seas’, Royal Caribbean’s latest and largest cruise ship, arrived for its inaugural presentation. The 365-meter vessel, built by Finland’s Meyer Turku shipyard, welcomed tourism professionals and international journalists on board, offering a first look at what the company calls a “floating city.”
With no passengers on its maiden approach, the ship docked at the northern pier, where Málaga Cruise Port adapted its mobile gangways to accommodate the vessel’s immense scale. The day’s agenda included an official tour and the customary exchange of gifts marking the ship’s first visit to the city. As evening approached, the ‘Legend of the Seas’ prepared to set sail for Civitavecchia, the gateway port to Rome, with a fireworks display lighting up the Costa del Sol coastline at 22:20.
Floating City at Sea
The ‘Legend of the Seas’ stands as a new benchmark in cruise engineering. Part of Royal Caribbean’s Icon class, the ship boasts a gross tonnage of 250,800 GT and can host up to 7,600 guests at full capacity, though its standard occupancy is 5,610. The design is centered around the concept of a self-contained city, featuring eight themed neighborhoods, seven pools, ten whirlpools, the Category 6 waterpark, and the panoramic AquaDome. Central Park, a lush space with over 30,000 plants, and 28 distinct dining venues further reinforce the ship’s city-like atmosphere.
In line with evolving environmental standards, the vessel is powered by liquefied natural gas and incorporates advanced energy efficiency systems. This summer, Royal Caribbean will operate the ‘Legend of the Seas’ on Western Mediterranean routes from Barcelona and Civitavecchia, before repositioning it to Fort Lauderdale for the Caribbean season in November.
