Antonelli’s Win in China Shakes Up Formula 1 But the Biggest Shock Is Yet to Come

Antonelli conquers China but the season’s intrigue is just beginning — Mercedes and Ferrari on the edge

Antonelli takes his first F1 victory, as rising tensions behind the scenes reveal a brewing conflict: Mercedes and Ferrari walk a fine line, while Williams stages a surprising comeback. With the race for the season’s jackpot wide open, the real intrigue is just beginning.

The 2026 Chinese Grand Prix marked a turning point for several teams and drivers. Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who had just turned 20, claimed his first-ever Formula 1 victory. His confident win at the Shanghai circuit not only brought him closer to the top of the driver standings, but also showed that Mercedes can set the pace under the new regulations. Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz overcame numerous difficulties to secure two points for Williams—an impressive result for the British team after a tough start to the season.

Antonelli didn’t break Max Verstappen’s record as the youngest race winner, but his name is now firmly etched in Formula 1 history. The Italian seized the lead right from the start, leaving not only his teammate George Russell behind, but also both Ferrari drivers. Mercedes capitalized on their strategic advantage, while Ferrari once again got caught in an internal battle between their drivers, costing them a better result. Russell holds onto the championship lead, but his advantage over Antonelli is now down to just four points.

Race start and chaos

From the opening seconds, the Shanghai race resembled a chaotic spectacle. Four cars (both McLarens, Albon, and Bortoleto) failed to start due to technical issues, and Hadjar spun out on the very first lap. Ferrari took advantage and surged ahead, but Antonelli swiftly regained the lead, overtaking Hamilton on the long straight. Russell kept pace as well, and soon Mercedes occupied the top two positions. However, Stroll’s crash in the AMR26 brought out the safety car, reshuffling the order and giving rivals a new opportunity.

After the restart, the race took on a new rhythm. Colapinto and Ocon, out in front on worn tires, became an obstacle for Russell, who lost time trying to overtake them. At the same time, Hamilton was displaying his skill by closing the gap to Antonelli. Despite a strong start, Ferrari couldn’t keep pace on hard tires, and soon Mercedes regained the lead. The spotlight then turned to a duel between Leclerc and Hamilton, which enlivened the middle of the race and showed that the fight for the podium could be intense even without the championship leaders involved.

Ferrari’s internal rivalry

Ferrari found itself once again at the center of internal competition. Leclerc and Hamilton traded positions, refusing to yield an inch. At that point, Russell took advantage of the situation, overtaking both to secure second place. Meanwhile, Antonelli pulled away from his pursuers and calmly brought the race home for the win. Mercedes scored a one-two finish, while Ferrari had to settle for third, which was small consolation after a string of setbacks. Hamilton finally stepped onto the podium as a Ferrari driver, but the gap to the leader proved too wide.

While Mercedes was consolidating its position, Williams unexpectedly found itself in the spotlight thanks to Sainz’s efforts. The Spaniard delivered one of his strongest races in recent times, despite an unfortunate strategy and a safety car deployment that coincided with his pit stop. Sainz managed to stay focused, managed tire wear skillfully, and capitalized on rivals’ mistakes to finish ninth. For Williams, these two points were a real gift, considering the tough start to the season and lack of consistency.

Alonso faces difficulties

Fernando Alonso once again encountered technical problems. His start was flawless, and he rapidly climbed into the top ten, but the lack of Honda engine power and vibration issues prevented him from fighting for higher positions. After switching to medium tires, conditions only worsened, and on lap 33 Alonso was forced to retire early. For Aston Martin, the season began with a string of setbacks, and so far the team has failed to find stability in either reliability or pace.

Interestingly, this weekend, fans were drawn not only to the on-track battles, but also to events outside motorsport. For example, there was recent discussion about an incident where a well-known footballer drove a new car for the first time and immediately attracted police attention — details on Mbappé’s debut behind the wheel of a BMW sparked heated reactions among sports fans.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli is a young Italian racing driver who has made a name for himself in Formula 1 in a short time. His debut victory in China was the result not only of his talent but also of Mercedes’ strategic teamwork. Antonelli is known for his composure and ability to quickly adapt to new conditions, making him a top contender for this season’s title. His achievements are already being compared to those of motorsport legends, and experts note that the fight for the 2026 championship promises to be especially intense.
