The Mercedes CLA 250+ storms onto the market, aiming to reshape perceptions of electric cars. The German brand hasn’t just launched another EV – it has created a vehicle that can impress even the most discerning drivers. An impressive driving range, lightning-fast charging, and a high-tech cabin are just a few of the highlights awaiting the owners of this newcomer. But there are some nuances to consider as well.
From the first moments behind the wheel, it’s clear: this is more than just an electric car — it’s a true premium-class contender. The CLA 250+ promises up to 792 kilometers on a single charge, a figure that until recently seemed unattainable for electric vehicles. For comparison, the classic Mercedes 190 E with a gasoline engine could only dream of such numbers. Here, you get 800 volts of power — comparable to a Berlin city tram — and 320 kW charging capacity. Even Tesla can’t yet match these specs.
Interior and technology
Inside, the CLA 250+ greets the driver and passengers with a genuine technological spectacle. A massive touchscreen display, AI integration, voice control, and Google support transform every trip into an engaging digital experience. The fourth-generation Mercedes Operating System is both fast and intuitive, while the virtual assistant responds to commands with remarkable accuracy.
However, not all features seem flawless. The touch-sensitive steering wheel buttons take some getting used to and don’t always respond on the first try. Still, the overall impression of the interior is a blend of luxury and advanced technology, where every detail is carefully considered.
Space and ergonomics
The front seats are impressively comfortable with excellent lateral support. Both driver and passenger have plenty of space, but the experience changes in the rear. Getting in is not easy—the thick roof pillar requires agility, and the windows only roll down halfway. The central armrest with cup holders doesn’t add much convenience, and the 405-liter trunk won’t surprise fans of long road trips.
Up front, though, there’s a deep compartment for the charging cable—another 100 liters of useful space. The rear seatbacks can’t be folded down from the trunk, which somewhat limits practicality. Still, for city driving and short trips, it’s more than enough.
Range and charging
The CLA 250+ delivers outstanding range. In real-world testing, the car covered just over 500 kilometers on a single charge—a result that impresses, considering the test vehicle was fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 5 performance tires, which increase energy consumption. With a set of low rolling resistance tires, specially designed for this model, it’s possible to get close to the claimed 792 kilometers.
The additional AMG Line equipment adds about 70 kilograms to the vehicle’s weight, which also affects consumption. On average, the car uses 17.8 kWh per 100 kilometers, providing a real-world range of about 508 kilometers. With careful driving, consumption can be reduced to 13.9 kWh, and the range can be increased to 600 kilometers.
Charging is a particular point of pride for the CLA 250+. Thanks to its 800-volt architecture and 320 kW output, the 85 kWh battery charges to 80% in just 22 minutes. Standard equipment includes a heat pump and an intelligent route planning system with battery preheating.
Performance and comfort
On the road, the CLA 250+ is confident and composed. Even at speeds over 200 km/h, the cabin remains quiet, and the streamlined body minimizes wind noise. While the wide tires generate a noticeable hum, the suspension effectively absorbs bumps, smoothing out even large potholes.
Despite its two-ton weight, the car feels light and agile. Steering is a bit vague on center but becomes precise with the slightest turn. The ESP stability system reacts instantly, and the low center of gravity ensures excellent stability during sharp maneuvers. Acceleration is smooth and powerful, while the braking distance from 100 km/h is just 33 meters—an outstanding result.
Overall impression
The CLA 250+ isn’t just an electric car—it’s a real challenge to its rivals. It combines cutting-edge technology, a high level of comfort, and impressive performance. Of course, no car is perfect and this model has its quirks, but Mercedes has clearly set a new standard for electric sedans. The price remains a question: the base version starts at 55,000 euros, while the top trim will set you back over 66,000. Still, for these features and capabilities, many are willing to pay.
