Irene Urdangarin and Juan Urquijo Split: Details of the Couple’s Last Public Appearance After Ending Their Relationship

The End of a Royal Romance: Why Did Irene Urdangarin and Juan Urquijo Break Up?

Irene Urdangarin, granddaughter of honorary King Juan Carlos I, and Juan Urquijo have ended their relationship. Their last public encounter, which took place after the breakup, has come to light. We share details about the reasons for their split and the young couple’s future plans.

Irene Urdangarin and Juan Urquijo, one of the most talked-about young couples in Spain’s social circles, have ended their relationship. The news came as a surprise to many who had followed the development of their romance, which had always been viewed in a positive light. Despite the breakup, the former couple recently crossed paths at a private event, marking their first and last joint public appearance in their new status.

The encounter took place on July 26 at a party hosted by sisters Allegra and Cecilia Hohenlohe at the Galician estate Pazo de Oca. According to eyewitnesses, Irene and Juan arrived separately and spent the evening in different groups of friends. They did not interact or were seen together, confirming that their decision to part ways is final.

The contrast with the recent past is especially striking when remembering that just a few weeks earlier, on July 10, the couple attended Piru Urquijo’s birthday together, Juan’s grandmother. At that time, their relationship seemed stable. Nevertheless, according to available information, the breakup was amicable, and the two—friends since childhood and distant relatives—intend to maintain a good relationship.

One of the main reasons cited for the breakup is the distance between them. In the near future, the couple’s paths will diverge geographically: Irene Urdangarin is set to begin her studies at Oxford, while Juan Urquijo is pursuing a career as an agricultural engineer in the Madrid area. Further evidence of their separation was Irene’s absence from the christening of Lucas, the first child of Teresa Urquijo and Madrid mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida, which took place the day after the party.

Now, the granddaughter of honorary monarchs Juan Carlos I and Sophia of Greece plans to fully focus on her studies in hotel management, tourism, and events. She is entering an important stage of her professional development. Juan, for his part, is also focused on his career. Previously, distance hadn’t been an obstacle for the couple, even when Irene spent several months volunteering in Cambodia, but current life circumstances have proven decisive.

It is worth noting that around the same time, Irene’s cousin Victoria Federica de Marichalar announced her breakup with her partner, Borja Moreno Oriol. Reports indicate that this separation was also mutual and happened without conflict.
