Spanish cinema in mourning: actress Silma López publishes a moving farewell letter to her friend Verónica Echegui.

Has quedado grabada para siempre en mí: una despedida que conmovió a toda España.

Spanish actress Silma López, star of the series “Valeria”, has shared touching memories of her close friend Verónica Echegui, who passed away at the age of 42. Her heartfelt message reveals the depth of their friendship and the pain of loss that has shaken the Spanish film community.

The Spanish film world is going through a difficult week, overshadowed by the loss of several iconic figures. Following news of the deaths of composer Manuel de la Calva and actor Eusebio Poncela, the industry was shaken by reports of Verónica Echegui’s passing. The actress died at the age of 42 after battling cancer, an illness she had kept private.

Echegui’s sudden passing sparked a strong public response. Social networks were filled with heartfelt tributes from colleagues, friends, and fans of her talent. Among the many messages, a poignant note stood out—posted by actress Silma Lopez, known for her leading role in the popular Netflix series “Valeria.” Lopez was one of Echegui’s closest friends.

A farewell for Verónica Echegui was held in a private setting at La Paz crematorium in Alcobendas, in accordance with her last wishes. Only her closest loved ones attended, including her partner, actor Álex García, who was inconsolable. Silma Lopez, also deeply affected by the loss, later shared photos of the two together on social media. Their friendship began during the filming of “Yo no soy esa,” where they played best friends—a bond that grew beyond the screen.

In her heartfelt letter, López shared that despite the bitterness of loss, she still feels love. She shared very personal and warm memories, such as how Verónica was the first to learn about her pregnancy, or how, as adults, they would sleep together on a small futon. The actress fondly recalled their “uncontrollable fits of laughter,” which she said were more contagious than any virus.

Silma López compared her friend to another legend of Spanish cinema, Ángela Molina, with whom they had the chance to work together. According to her, Echegui, like Molina, was a true star not because of titles or awards, but because everyone around her felt special. In her message, López also did not hide her anger and sense of injustice: “Why does someone so inspiring and genuine have to leave?” She admitted she selfishly wishes her friend could stay, and that she constantly looks at their photos together and listens to her voice messages.

Concluding her message, the actress described her state as being “like a deflated balloon,” left without air. However, she said that memories of Verónica, the moments they shared, and their conversations fill that balloon with life once again. “You are forever imprinted on me,” wrote López. “Within me, you are full of life. I love you, Vero.”
