The Spanish national team confidently advanced through the qualifying stage for the 2026 World Cup, paving the way for a highly anticipated match against Argentina. The meeting between the reigning champions of Europe and South America has been under discussion for several years, but a packed schedule had previously prevented the project from moving forward.
Now that both teams have virtually secured their places in the world tournament, football officials have begun working out the details. The match is tentatively scheduled for late March, during the window for World Cup playoff games and after the December draw in Washington has been completed.
FIFA intends to set aside a dedicated day for this event to ensure fans’ and teams’ full attention. According to preliminary reports, the match may be played on March 28, coinciding with European and intercontinental playoffs.
The choice of venue remains undecided. Cities in the USA and Saudi Arabia have been mentioned as possible options, but the Spanish federation favors the capital of Qatar. Lusail Stadium in Doha is seen as the most suitable arena due to its status, climate, and convenient location for both teams. Additionally, Qatar is home to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, which also plays a role in the decision.
If the decision favors Doha, the stadium where the Argentinians claimed their third World Cup title will once again host a major international event. For the Argentine national team, it is a chance to defend the trophy they won in London in the summer of 2022, while for Spain, it offers an opportunity to compete for this prestigious title for the first time.
