Why an Abandoned Sanatorium in Zaragoza Has Become a Magnet for Halloween Tourists

From Hope to Horror: The Secrets Hidden in the Ruins of the Old Hospital at the Foot of Mount Moncayo

In Zaragoza province stands an abandoned building that attracts fans of the mysterious and the legendary. With Halloween approaching, this site grows especially popular. Its history is steeped in dark secrets and unanswered mysteries.

With the arrival of autumn and the approach of All Saints’ Day, interest reawakens in one of Aragon’s most mysterious and haunting places. At the foot of the majestic Moncayo mountain, hidden beneath the thick foliage of ancient trees, lie the ruins of a building whose history has become an urban legend. This is the former tuberculosis sanatorium, Agramonte, which has transformed from a symbol of hope for patients into a pilgrimage site for fans of the paranormal.

Every year, dozens of thrill-seekers are drawn to the area, lured by tales of its dark and unsettling past. However, authorities and experts strongly urge people not to enter the partially destroyed buildings. The structure is badly dilapidated and poses a real threat to life—far more tangible than any ghosts. For this reason, it is recommended to limit your visit to a walk through the picturesque surroundings and admire its grim facade from a distance.

The irony is that this place was originally intended for very different purposes. In the 1930s, plans were made to build a luxurious hotel here, so that guests could enjoy the pure mountain air. But the civil war changed everything. After Franco’s dictatorship was established, the land was expropriated, and the unfinished building was converted into a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients. The sisters of the Congregation of Mercy of Saint Anne took care of the patients, with financial support provided by one of the region’s largest savings banks.

For forty years, the hospital was a haven for those who could not afford expensive treatment. It was only closed in 1978, after the national social security system assumed responsibility for combating the disease. Since then, the huge building, having changed owners several times, has never found a new purpose. It is slowly being overtaken by nature in the heart of the national park—its walls now covered in graffiti, but inside, traces of its former layout can still be seen.

It is this very desolation that has given rise to a host of chilling stories. The sanatorium is surrounded by rumors of unexplained sounds caught on tape, shadows slipping through the corridors, and voices from the other side. The place became so notorious that it even drew the attention of television crews investigating paranormal phenomena. Some visitors claim their cameras captured mysterious figures, while others believe that within these walls, myths, superstitions, and real-life tragedies have woven together in strange and haunting ways.

By day, the ruins set against the forest landscape paint a melancholic, even picturesque scene. But at dusk, when silence and mist settle over the valley, the place transforms, and only the bravest dare to disturb its peace. The blend of genuine history, utter decay, and local legends has made the former clinic one of the most sought-after spots to visit on Halloween, where its medical past is inextricably linked to the realm of folklore and imagination.
