In the province of Segovia, within the autonomous community of Castilla y León, lies Cuéllar—a medieval town rightfully considered one of the region’s hidden gems. With its rich heritage and centuries-old traditions, this locality attracts cultural tourism enthusiasts. Its historic center is officially recognized as a site of Spain’s historical and artistic heritage (Conjunto Histórico).
Cuéllar is best known for its impressive fortress walls and the majestic Castle of the Dukes of Alburquerque (Castillo de los Duques de Alburquerque), constructed in the 15th century. This fortress, once a witness to noble intrigues and battles, is now open to visitors. Guests can enjoy both standard tours and theatrical performances that immerse them in the atmosphere of medieval life. Nearby, in the former Church of San Martín (iglesia de San Martín), is the Center for the Interpretation of Mudejar Art (Centro de Interpretación del Arte Mudéjar), where visitors can explore the characteristics of this architectural style, which is widespread throughout the region.
A stroll along the cobbled streets of Cuéllar is truly a journey through time. In addition to its Mudéjar-style churches, the town retains numerous palace houses and monasteries that highlight its historical significance. Every building here preserves the memory of noble families and events that have shaped the fate of the city. The cultural program is enriched by a visit to the Tenerías Cultural Center (Centro Cultural Tenerías), which introduces visitors to ancient crafts. The scenic landscapes surrounding the town, including pine forests, wetlands, and the río Cega, add a special charm.
However, the main attraction that has brought Cuéllar nationwide fame is the encierros, traditional bull runs. It is believed that the oldest event of this kind in all of Spain is held here. Every year at the end of August, during the festival in honor of the Virgen del Rosario, thousands of daredevils and spectators gather to either take part in or witness this thrilling spectacle. The course of the bull run passes not only through the town’s streets but also through nearby pine groves, making it truly unique.
Beyond the encierros, the cultural life of the town is rich with other events such as the Feria Mudéjar and the romería del Henar. The blend of a rich historical heritage, unique traditions, and authentic atmosphere makes Cuéllar a must-visit destination for anyone looking to discover the real Spain.
