In the heart of California, where innovation has long become part of everyday life, a home has emerged that is literally redefining modern architecture. In Los Altos Hills, perched on a hillside overlooking the San Francisco Bay, stands an extraordinary building known as the Casa de los Cuernos, or “House with Horns.” The project was led by WOJR, an architectural firm renowned for its experiments with form and light. Here, the architects set out not just to integrate the house into the landscape, but to create a structure that both becomes part of the surrounding nature and stands out against it.
At first glance, the house captivates with its unusual form: several curved volumes reaching upward resemble horns, giving the building its name. These elements not only define its striking appearance but also shape the interior, filling the spaces with light and air. Inside, you’ll find soaring double-height ceilings, expansive windows, and a carefully orchestrated interplay of light that shifts with the time of day and season.
Architectural concept
WOJR approached the project as if creating a tool for observing nature. Every curve and every line of the façade serves the purpose of capturing and reflecting the ever-changing mood of California’s climate. The architects emphasize that the house was designed so its residents could witness the changing of day and night, the fog drifting over the bay, and the play of light throughout the year.
The upper level of the house is open to the maximum: this is where the main living areas are found, including a spacious living room, a dining area with a marble fireplace, and a kitchen seamlessly integrated under a single ‘canopy’ line with the rest of the space. The interiors feature dark wood and metal, creating a striking contrast with the natural tones of the surrounding landscape. The master bedroom and two additional guest rooms are also located on this level, while the bathroom stands out thanks to an oval tub made from rare Danby marble.
Interior and Layout
The lower floor, partially nestled into the hillside, has a more intimate character. Concrete and warm wood predominate here, with windows opening onto small inner courtyards filled with gravel and greenery. This level also houses two more bedrooms, a study, and a spa area with a pool, where marble accents visually complement the massive concrete ceiling.
Every interior detail has been carefully considered, from wall textures to furniture arrangement. WOJR aimed to create a space where one can feel secluded without losing connection to nature. Even in the most enclosed rooms, the presence of the outside world is felt — thanks to skylights and panoramic views of the hills.
Connection with Nature
Special attention has been given to the landscape surrounding the house. The architects opted against the traditional lawn in favor of multi-layered plantings of native grasses, shrubs, and oaks. This approach not only emphasizes the building’s connection to its setting but also allows residents to observe nature changing in real time. The shifting seasons are reflected in the colors and textures of the plants, while the carefully chosen shades of the facade harmonize with the environment.
The view of San Francisco Bay unfolds from virtually every room. This makes the house more than just a place to live—it becomes a true observation deck, offering the chance to watch sunrises, sunsets, and the region’s signature fog.

The finishes feature materials that highlight a natural aesthetic: marble, wood, metal, and concrete. Each element was selected for its durability and visual impact. Danby marble, used for the fireplace and bathroom, brings a touch of sophistication to the interiors, while the dark wood facade creates a sense of security and warmth.
