Andalusia boosts healthcare spending and overtakes other Spanish regions

Extra funding for hospitals promises shorter waiting times in Andalusia

The Andalusian authorities have invested a record amount in healthcare. Increased funding has helped reduce waiting lists and strengthen primary care. These new measures are already making a difference for local residents.

In 2026, Andalusia became a model for other regions of Spain thanks to a sharp increase in healthcare investment. This decision has already noticeably improved the quality of medical services and access to care for residents. According to El confidencial, the regional authorities focused on boosting the budget and modernizing infrastructure, which sped up patient care and eased the burden on hospitals.

Budget growth and new priorities

According to El confidencial, next year Andalusia’s healthcare spending will reach €16,265.9 million. This is €1,016 million more than in 2025 and accounts for nearly a third of the autonomous region’s total expenses. The authorities aim to make medicine more modern and efficient. Special attention is given to primary care: €5,472 million has been allocated, up 5.8% from the previous year. Healthcare spending per resident will rise to €1,883, significantly higher than last year’s figures.

Regional authorities note that these changes have already produced results. Waiting lists for surgeries have been reduced, and average waiting times have decreased. This is especially important given that in other regions of Spain, access to medical services has hardly improved. This approach allows Andalusia not only to catch up but to surpass other autonomous regions in key indicators.

Leaders of change: Castilla-La Mancha and Asturias

Andalusia is not the only region to increase spending on healthcare. Castilla-La Mancha has also allocated 4.069 million euros to health services, up 7.6% from last year. The focus here is on attracting new specialists and implementing modern technologies. This approach is helping the region strengthen its healthcare system and boost public trust.

Asturias ranked third in healthcare investment growth. In 2026, the healthcare budget there will range from 2.549 to 2.581 million euros, a 4.4–4.5% increase compared to 2025. Per capita spending will reach 2,525 euros—the highest figure among all regions in the country. The authorities in Asturias are prioritizing shorter wait times and expanding the number of medical facilities to make care more accessible.

Modernization and digitalization

Experts note that the leading regions are adopting different strategies to improve their healthcare systems. Some focus on building new hospitals and upgrading equipment, while others emphasize the introduction of digital technologies and staff optimization. This approach not only increases the volume of services provided but also enhances their quality. As a result, patients gain faster and more convenient access to doctors, and the system becomes more resilient to external challenges.

An important factor is how regions allocate funds between different areas of medicine. For instance, in Andalusia, a significant portion of the budget is directed towards primary care, which helps ease the burden on hospitals and reduces the strain on specialists. In Castilla-La Mancha and Asturias, more attention is given to technical equipment and expanding the number of medical staff.

Context and trends

In recent years, Spain has seen a general trend of increasing healthcare spending. This is related to the growing number of patients, an aging population, and the need to update infrastructure. Many regions face challenges such as staff shortages and outdated equipment, prompting authorities to seek new solutions. In 2025, similar measures were implemented in Madrid and the Basque Country, where budgets were increased and digital services for patients were introduced. These steps helped reduce waiting times and improve resident satisfaction with the quality of medical services.
