In Asturias, a proposed bill is on the agenda that could fundamentally change the rules for selling energy drinks to minors. Regional authorities intend to ban not only the sale but also the consumption of such products by individuals under 16. If approved, this measure would make Asturias the first region in Spain where such restrictions are codified by law.
The document will soon be submitted to the autonomous parliament for review. It outlines measures that will affect both stores and food service establishments. For example, vending machines will be required to have age verification systems, and the drinks themselves must be placed in specially designated areas to restrict teen access. Shop and café owners will be required to verify customers’ ages before completing any sales.
According to local officials, there are about 30,000 adolescents in the region aged 12 to 16 who could potentially consume energy drinks. Authorities emphasize that the spread of these beverages among young people raises serious concerns about the health of the next generation. They believe the introduction of new rules will help reduce risks and raise awareness of possible negative health effects.
It is worth noting that similar restrictions are already in place in some EU countries, such as Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia. In Spain, however, only Galicia is considering a comparable bill. Asturias could thus become a pioneer in tackling the uncontrolled consumption of energy drinks among minors. The initiative is expected to spark widespread public debate and serve as an example for other regions in the country.
