Technical Features: Next-Generation Hybrid System
A new compact crossover, the BYD Atto 2 DM-i, has launched on the Spanish market, immediately drawing attention for its unusual blend of features. The model is equipped with a modern Dual Mode Intelligent (DM-i) hybrid system that prioritizes electric drive. The 1.5-liter, 98 hp gasoline engine primarily works as a generator, connecting to the wheels only when necessary. The electric motor delivers 145 kW (197 hp) and 300 Nm of torque, ensuring lively acceleration and confident city driving.
Depending on the configuration, the car is available with two power options: 122 kW (166 hp) for the Active version and 156 kW (212 hp) for the Boost. Battery options also differ: the base version features a 7.8 kWh battery, allowing up to 40 km of electric-only driving, while the top model comes with an 18 kWh Blade Battery, providing up to 90 km without using gasoline. The total driving range reaches 1,000 km, setting the model apart from competitors in the hybrid segment.
Design and Equipment: Comfort Meets Technology
Visually, the BYD Atto 2 DM-i retains the recognizable features of the electric version, but is distinguished by a larger front grille and a redesigned front bumper for improved engine cooling. Its compact dimensions and a 2.62-meter wheelbase have made it possible to create a spacious interior that feels larger than expected from the outside.
Inside, the car impresses with high-quality finishes and thoughtful ergonomics. The 8.8-inch digital instrument panel and the rotatable 12.8-inch central display make controls intuitive. The gear lever has been moved to the steering column, freeing up space on the central console for a large compartment and a 50W wireless charger. The trunk capacity is 425 liters, expanding to 1,335 liters with the seats folded, making it ideal for family trips.
Driving impressions: a balance of performance and comfort
During the first tests, the Boost version stood out, combining long range with impressive performance. The car always starts in electric mode and offers a smooth, quiet ride in city traffic. On the highway, there’s plenty of power for confident overtaking, with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds. Despite its considerable weight, the crossover remains agile, and transitions between powertrain modes are almost imperceptible.
The suspension is tuned for comfort, effectively absorbing road imperfections. There is slight body roll in corners, but it doesn’t affect handling. Excellent visibility and a 360-degree camera system in the Boost trim make parking much easier. Additionally, the car is equipped with V2L functionality, allowing external devices to be powered at up to 3.3 kW.
Trims and pricing: accessible and well-equipped
In Spain, the BYD Atto 2 DM-i is available in two main versions. The base Active model comes with 16-inch wheels, adaptive cruise control, a rearview camera, and smartphone access. The top-tier Boost features 17-inch wheels, a panoramic roof, electric adjustment and heated seats, as well as a more powerful built-in charger. With government subsidies and discounts, the Active is priced at €18,190, while the Boost costs €20,190.
With its well-thought-out engineering, spacious interior, and attractive price, the BYD Atto 2 DM-i stands out as one of the most compelling hybrid crossover options for Spanish buyers seeking an economical and modern car for everyday driving.
