A new food safety scandal has erupted in Spain. Authorities in four autonomous communities — the Basque Country, Navarra, Castilla-La Mancha, and Aragón — have received an urgent alert about the detection of listeria in batches of aged cheese made from raw milk. Several well-known brands are at risk, raising concern among consumers and nutrition experts.
The problem has affected cheeses from the Beiardi, Agort, Udabe, and Eroski brands. The warning covers specific batches with expiration dates set for fall 2026. In particular, this includes lots numbered 2528430 and 2528410, as well as products with various best-before dates ranging from September to October. Authorities do not rule out the possibility that some contaminated cheese may have reached other regions, since distribution networks often cover much broader areas than official documents indicate.
The first warning came from Navarra, after which the information was quickly relayed to other regions through a special rapid data-sharing system between the autonomous communities. Shops and warehouses across the country are now being inspected in a bid to quickly remove the hazardous products from circulation. Stores have already started pulling suspicious batches from their shelves, and consumers are being strongly advised to check their refrigerators.
Health risks and recommendations
Listeria is a dangerous bacterium that can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of infection may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. In some cases, the illness can be severe and requires urgent medical attention.
Anyone who has purchased cheeses from the specified brands and batches is advised not to consume them. If you experience any signs of illness after eating such products, seek medical help immediately. Pregnant women are encouraged to review up-to-date dietary guidelines and avoid consuming raw milk cheeses to reduce risks for themselves and their unborn child.
Authorities emphasize that the situation is under control and all necessary measures to protect the public are already being taken. However, vigilance and caution from consumers are especially important right now. Check packaging, follow the news, and do not put your health at risk.
