An incident occurred late Thursday night near Fontellas (Navarra) that could have ended in tragedy. A 54-year-old man from Zaragoza became the focus of a police operation after his van was spotted going the wrong way on the A-68 highway. He was behind the wheel in a heavily intoxicated state, and his driver’s license had been revoked by a court order.
Emergency services began receiving alarm calls at around 4:30 a.m. Several drivers reported a white van speeding in the opposite direction towards Zaragoza, blatantly disregarding all traffic regulations. By that point, the man had already driven more than eleven kilometers, putting dozens of motorists at risk. According to police estimates, over forty vehicles—including both cars and trucks—had to swerve abruptly to avoid a collision.
Patrol officers tried to stop the offender using sirens and flashing lights, but he ignored their signals and kept driving. A pursuit ensued, during which police managed to overtake the van and block its path. After detaining the driver, it was found he was significantly intoxicated—breathalyzer results showed 0.78 mg/l, far above the legal limit. It was also discovered that he was not authorized to drive: his license had been confiscated by court order.
A criminal case has been opened against the detainee for dangerous driving and driving under the influence without a valid license. After processing all the necessary paperwork, the man was released on the condition that he appear in court in Tudela. The vehicle was seized and placed in secure storage pending further court orders.
