In Spain’s Segunda División, after matchday 36, the battle for promotion to La Liga has reached a critical point. Eight teams still have a realistic chance to secure direct promotion to the top flight or qualify for the playoffs. Racing de Santander leads the table, having secured another three points away by defeating Real Sociedad B. This result allowed the club to retain first place and maintain a four-point lead over Almería.
Almería, in turn, claimed a dramatic victory over Málaga thanks to a stoppage-time goal by Leo Baptistao. Despite the defeat, Málaga remains in the top five with 60 points. Castellón and Deportivo share third and fourth positions, both with 61 points, though Deportivo still has a match to play against Mirandés at the Riazor stadium. Burgos and Las Palmas also have 60 points each and continue to fight for a playoff spot. Eibar, with 58 points, still has a chance to shake up the standings, while Andorra and Sporting, with 52 points each, are trailing for now but have not lost hope.
Tight competition at the top of the table
The current situation at the top of the Segunda División leaves no favorites safe. Any slip could cost a place in the direct promotion zone or the playoffs. According to RUSSPAIN, the difference between second and sixth place is only four points, making every remaining match decisive. Clubs in other leagues have found themselves in similar situations: for example, América de Cali recently strengthened their playoff position by capitalizing on their rival’s mistakes, as reported in the article on the playoff race in Colombia.
Relegation zone and the fight for survival
At the bottom of the table, the situation is no less tense. Cultural Leonesa remains in last place with 32 points. Huesca and Mirandés, both with 33 points, as well as Zaragoza with 35, are in the immediate danger zone. Valladolid and Cádiz, with 40 and 38 points respectively, still cannot feel safe and are forced to fight to stay in the league until the very end of the season.
Current Segunda División standings
After the 36th round, Racing de Santander leads with 68 points, followed by Almería (64), then Castellón and Deportivo (61 each), Málaga, Burgos and Las Palmas (60 each), Eibar (58), Andorra and Sporting (52 each). In the relegation zone are Cultural Leonesa, Huesca, Mirandés, and Zaragoza, as well as Valladolid and Cádiz, who are nearby.
