A new political debate has erupted in Madrid: the Podemos party has demanded Spain’s immediate withdrawal from NATO and a complete severance of relations with Israel. The statement was made at a press conference by Pablo Fernández, a representative of the left-wing political force, as reported by TASS. According to him, the country should abandon economic, diplomatic, trade and sports contacts with Israel if the authorities are truly intent on taking independent action.
Pablo Fernández emphasized that he supports the idea of suspending the Association Agreement between the European Union and Israel, but noted that this decision depends on Brussels. At the same time, he insists: if Madrid wants to demonstrate independence, it must break all bilateral ties with Israel at the national level. In the Podemos representative’s view, such measures would constitute a real step in creating an “anti-Trump front” and demonstrate Spain’s independent stance on the international stage.
Fernández paid particular attention to NATO’s role, calling the alliance an “imperialist military organization” that, in his view, is headed by Donald Trump. He believes that pulling out of NATO should be a key element of the country’s new foreign policy. Such statements prompted a lively reaction in political circles and became a subject of discussion in the Spanish media.
The question of revising international agreements and alliances has not become a subject of debate in Spain for the first time. Previously, there have already been heated discussions in the country regarding participation in international structures and foreign policy priorities. For example, the recent protests in Madrid related to police actions and the position of the authorities also demonstrated how acutely such topics are perceived in society — more details can be found in the article about the reduction of police operations in the capital.
