One of the worst tragedies in recent years occurred in Shreveport, Louisiana: as a result of an armed attack in a residential area, eight children were killed and two women were seriously injured. According to KSLA, the suspect, Shamar Elkins, was killed by police after a chase that ended in a neighboring city.
Sequence of events
According to police, the incident began on the morning of April 19 in the Cedar Grove neighborhood. The first victim was Elkins’ wife, who was shot in the face on Harrison Street. After that, the suspect went to another house on W 79th Street, where he opened fire on a second woman and the children. Among the dead were seven biological siblings and their cousin, aged 3 to 11. The victims’ names: Jayla Elkins (3 years old), Shayla Elkins (5), Kayla Pugh (6), Layla Pugh (7), Markaydon Pugh (10), Sariahh Snow (11), Khedarrion Snow (6), Braylon Snow (5). The families identified the deceased based on information from the county coroner.
Police actions and investigation
After the attack, Elkins tried to escape by stealing a car. The chase ended in Bossier City, where he was shot and killed during a shootout with police on Brompton Lane. Investigators are now determining whether the fatal shot was self-inflicted or fired by police. No officers were injured during the operation. The Louisiana State Police are investigating the circumstances of the suspect’s death.
Victims and survivors
As a result of the attack, two women were injured, one of whom is Elkins’ wife and the mother of some of the deceased children. She underwent surgery and, according to police, is expected to survive. The second woman is also in serious condition. Another child, a 13-year-old boy, escaped by jumping from the roof of the house. He sustained fractures, but his life is not in danger. Preliminary reports indicate that a third woman managed to leave the scene unharmed.
Investigation and aftermath
Police note that the crime affected several families at once. The motives for Elkins’ actions are still unknown. Investigative activities are being carried out at four different locations: two houses where the shootings occurred, the site where the car was hijacked, and the location where the suspect was killed. Authorities emphasize that such a large-scale tragedy has become one of the most high-profile incidents for the city this year. Psychological support has been organized for staff who worked at the scene.
Police are asking anyone with photos, videos, or additional information about the incident to contact the phone numbers listed in the official announcements. According to KSLA, the investigation is ongoing and new details may emerge soon.
