On New Year’s Eve 2025, a real drama unfolded in the Catalan town of Vilablareix near Girona: a massive wooden dome structure that adorned the Mas Marroch restaurant, owned by the famous Roca brothers, was completely destroyed by fire. The blaze broke out in the middle of the night when the restaurant was closed, and fortunately, no one was injured.
The emergency call about the fire came in around 4:30 in the morning. Ten fire crews arrived quickly at the scene. Their main task was not only to put out the flames but also to prevent the fire from spreading to the neighboring building—a historic 15th-century Gothic estate that gave the restaurant its name. Thanks to coordinated efforts, the firefighters managed to contain the fire by 7 a.m., sparing the historic building from damage.
The destroyed dome was more than just an architectural highlight. It was a true feat of eco-friendly engineering. The dome spanned over twenty meters in diameter and reached a height of ten meters. This unique space hosted major events, banquets, and even prestigious gastronomic award ceremonies, including the Michelin star ceremony in 2016.
One of the restaurant’s owners, a renowned sommelier, did not hide his emotions after the incident. He expressed his gratitude to the firefighters and police for their prompt and careful work, and also shared his feelings: sadness and despair were mixed with relief that no one was hurt. Despite the shock, the restaurant team is already looking ahead and planning to restore the lost space, viewing the fire as a starting point for new ideas and projects.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated. Specialists are examining the scene to determine exactly what sparked the blaze. For the restaurant’s guests and fans, however, the main thing is that no one was injured, and the Roca brothers’ team is already poised for new achievements. Updates are expected soon on what the revamped Mas Marroch will look like and what surprises its owners are preparing.
