Fire in Cabo Tiñoso Evacuation and Fight to Protect Unique Nature

Murcia's emergency teams battle the flames as fierce winds make firefighting especially challenging

A large-scale fire broke out in Cabo Tiñoso. Dozens of residents have been evacuated and tourists rescued. The blaze threatens a valuable nature reserve.

The events in Cabo Tiñoso on Saturday night became an alarming wake-up call for everyone who values Spain’s natural heritage. A wildfire broke out in one of the most scenic and ecologically important areas of the Murcia region, forcing emergency services to respond as quickly as possible. With strong winds and challenging terrain, the fire spread across the hillsides, threatening not only unique plant and animal life, but also people caught in the disaster zone.

As the emergency unfolded, authorities ordered the immediate evacuation of around 80 camper vans stationed in the Rambla de la Azohía area. People left their temporary homes in a hurry, while rescuers simultaneously launched an operation to locate and evacuate two tourists who had spent the night near the coast. They were found sheltered among the rocks, and only the coordinated efforts of maritime services and the Civil Guard patrol prevented a tragedy.

Containment operation

Firefighters and forestry teams from different municipalities were urgently dispatched to the disaster zone. The effort to combat the blaze involved not only ground crews but also aircraft—by morning, helicopters had joined in to contain the flames in hard-to-reach areas. The situation was further complicated by strong winds, which not only fanned the fire, but, according to preliminary reports, also caused a power line accident that may have triggered the blaze.

The authorities of the Murcia region declared the first stage of emergency under the Infomur plan. This enabled them to mobilize additional resources and involve both municipal and state agencies in coordinating efforts. By morning, the wind had subsided, giving firefighters a chance to bring the situation under control, although firefighting operations continued under challenging conditions.

Response and support

Regional and city leaders kept residents promptly updated on developments via social media. Special attention was given to the safety of evacuees and coordination among various services. Not only firefighters and forestry workers were on the scene, but also civil protection staff, local police, and additional Guardia Civil patrols.

Throughout the night and early morning, new teams from neighboring municipalities arrived to relieve exhausted colleagues and reinforce control over the fire hotspots. By 8:30 am, two helicopters joined the firefighting efforts, enabling more effective work on slopes and in hard-to-reach areas. Despite the slower spread of the flames, the threat to the natural complex remained.

A unique area under threat

Cabo Tiñoso is part of the natural complex Sierra de la Muela, Cabo Tiñoso y Roldán, known for its wild landscape and rare species of plants and animals. This area is popular with hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, while its coastal waters are included in Spain’s network of marine reserves. A fire in such a zone can cause long-term damage to the ecosystem, which would take years to recover.

In recent years, Spain has faced a growing number of forest fires, especially in arid regions. Such incidents have already led to large-scale evacuations and significant losses for the environment. In 2025, a similar situation occurred in the province of Alicante, where fire destroyed hundreds of hectares of forest and forced local residents and tourists to evacuate. Murcia has also seen several major outbreaks, highlighting the need for constant preparedness by emergency services and the importance of preventive measures.
