Ford is strengthening its position in Spain’s commercial electric vehicle market by expanding the Electricity By Ford project to five traditional Madrid markets at once. After a successful pilot at Mercado de la Cebada and El Rastro, the program is now being rolled out to the Barceló, La Paz, Las Águilas, Chamberí, and Prosperidad markets. Two key models are in the spotlight: the Ford E-Transit Custom and Ford E-Transit Courier, both zero-emission vehicles, with official support from the Ayuntamiento de Madrid and Metrae.
Electric vans for the city center
For Madrid, where parking and logistics in historical districts have long been a challenge even for experienced drivers, the arrival of zero-emission electric vans is not just a technological step forward, but a real lifeline for small businesses. The new ZBE (low-emission zone) rules and unloading time restrictions are making traditional diesel and petrol vans increasingly uncompetitive. The Ford E-Transit Custom and E-Transit Courier, which have earned the top ‘zero’ rating on the environmental scale, can now not only enter the city center freely, but also park for free and without time limits in blue and green SER zones from 21:00 to 7:00. This is a major advantage for merchants who can’t afford to waste time and money looking for legal unloading spots.
Practice, not theory
Unlike many initiatives limited to slogans about a “green future,” Ford is offering the market real vehicles for everyday use. Vendors have the opportunity to test the E-Transit Custom and E-Transit Courier in real conditions: transporting goods, working on a tight schedule, without fear of fines for emissions or parking violations. According to Ford España representatives, this is not just a step towards sustainability, but also a way to convince skeptics that the batteries in modern electric vans can indeed withstand a full working day in the urban pace.
Markets and the city: an alliance for the future
Metrae, which unites Spain’s traditional markets, emphasizes that switching to electric vehicles is becoming inevitable for all cities with populations over 50,000. The new agreement with Ford is a logical continuation of the pilot stage and an effort to give markets the tools to adapt to tightening environmental requirements. The Metrae vice president notes that Ford’s diverse commercial lineup makes it possible to find solutions for different needs: not everyone is ready to switch to an electric vehicle immediately, but for city routes and short deliveries, the E-Transit Custom and E-Transit Courier are especially convincing.
Barcelona — the first at the starting line
Mercado Barceló is becoming the first market where both Ford models will operate in test mode until the end of June. After that, the vans will rotate monthly among the remaining participants in the program for four months. For the Ayuntamiento de Madrid, this project is part of the Madrid 360 strategy aimed at reducing emissions without putting pressure on small businesses. Municipal representatives emphasize that the capital has been recognized as a ‘forest city’ for six consecutive years and meets EU environmental standards, while such initiatives help maintain a balance between air quality requirements and support for traditional commerce.
Market context and prospects
The arrival of the E-Transit Custom and E-Transit Courier in Madrid’s markets is not just a demonstration of the possibilities of electric vehicles, but a real test for the entire sector. If the experiment proves successful, a gradual renewal of vehicle fleets can be expected in other Spanish cities as well. Importantly, Ford is not limited to a single model: the breadth of its commercial range allows it to respond flexibly to business needs. By comparison, other manufacturers are also focusing on electrification, but are not always able to offer such practical solutions for urban conditions. Incidentally, the nuances of operating electric models in real conditions were already discussed in the article about the Peugeot E-3008 Dual Motor — details on charging and ergonomic challenges can be found here.
The Ford E-Transit Custom and E-Transit Courier are modern commercial electric vans now available on the Spanish market. They are targeted at small and medium-sized businesses operating in urban areas where environmental restrictions are becoming increasingly strict. With support from the municipality and industry associations, these models have a unique opportunity to establish themselves in a segment that until recently was dominated by diesel vehicles.
