During the night leading into Saturday, a disturbing incident occurred in the small Galician town of Monforte de Lemos. Around three in the morning, an alarm went off in a residential building—at that moment, two Molotov cocktails were thrown into a space set to soon become a center for underage migrants.
As a result of the explosion and subsequent fire, the premises sustained significant damage. The blaze destroyed interior finishes and some property, but fortunately, no one was injured—there was nobody in the building at the time. Local residents woke to the noise and the smell of smoke, and firefighters and police quickly arrived on the scene.
The building where the incident took place belongs to the organization Prodeme and is located on Francisco Suarez Street. A new center was due to open here soon, intended for 80 underage migrants. The authorities of Galicia had announced the establishment of this facility just a week earlier, and preparations were already well underway.
Regional authorities expressed concern over the incident and condemned all forms of violence. Representatives from the social policy sector called on the public to remain calm and avoid hasty conclusions while the police investigation continues. In the town, discussions are underway as to whether the attack is connected to the recent announcement about the center or if it is a random act of vandalism. In any case, the incident has sparked widespread reaction among local residents and prompted debate on integration and security.
Police continue to work at the scene, examining evidence and interviewing potential witnesses. No official version of the incident has been released yet, but investigators are considering various motives for the attack. Authorities have promised to take all necessary measures to protect the future residents of the center and maintain order in the city.
