Heavy rains cause flooding and transport disruptions in Valencia and Castellón

Emergency services stretched to the limit by severe weather in Valencia and Castellón – latest updates

Eastern regions of Spain have been hit by heavy rainfall and sudden flooding. Several cities have experienced transport disruptions, while emergency services are working around the clock. Authorities are warning of possible changes to public transport schedules.

A night storm hit the eastern provinces of Spain, leaving flooded streets and disrupting transport services. Record rainfall was reported in Valencia and Castellón, resulting in local flooding and the temporary closure of several roads.

In the municipality of Aldaia, more than 57 liters of water per square meter fell in just half an hour. The torrent overflowed the La Saleta stream, flooding some city streets. However, the installed protective barriers withstood the main surge, preventing water from entering homes. Other cities in the region, including Manises, Paterna, Quart de Poblet, and Pedralba, also saw significant rainfall, in some cases exceeding 70 liters per square meter.

In Valencia, the regional capital, metro and tram services started with delays and on a reduced timetable. Passengers were advised to monitor updates, as further schedule changes are possible. In Castellón, rescuers evacuated a driver trapped in a car by rising water in the Sant Jordi area. Some towns in the province received more than 60 liters of rainfall per square meter overnight.

The situation is also worsening in neighboring regions. In Tarragona, around 400 homes were left without electricity, and coastal areas remain under a red weather alert. In total, six roads across the country have been closed due to flooding, three of them in the Valencian Community.

Meteorologists warn that the peak of bad weather will arrive in the next 24 hours. In some areas of Valencia, up to 300 liters of rainfall per square meter are expected over the entire duration of the cyclone. Authorities strongly advise residents not to leave their homes unless absolutely necessary and to closely follow official warnings. Red alert levels have been issued, indicating maximum risk to life and property.

Heavy rains are expected to spread during the day to other regions, including the Balearic Islands and the south of Catalonia. Authorities continue to send emergency notifications to residents’ mobile phones, and emergency services are operating in enhanced mode. Meteorologists do not rule out further flooding and disruptions to infrastructure.
