Catalonia is once again in the spotlight due to a sudden deterioration in weather conditions. From early Thursday morning, residents woke to the sound of torrential rain that swept over the coastal and surrounding areas. Authorities acted quickly, sending out an EsAlert emergency notification urging everyone to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise maximum caution.
The storm hit hardest in the south of Tarragona province, where the first torrents of water appeared even before dawn. By morning, the front had shifted toward Barcelona, with rainfall reaching critical levels. Meteorologists report that in some areas, over 40 liters of water per square meter fell in just half an hour. Although the downpours move swiftly without lingering too long in one spot, their intensity is enough to cause localized flooding and create dangerous conditions on the roads.
Catalan authorities have decided not to cancel public events, but are strongly advising people to avoid main transport routes and keep away from riverbeds and ravines. Even if the rain lets up in a particular area, the risk of sudden flash floods remains. Special attention is being paid to road safety: drivers are urged not to take unnecessary risks and to stay home whenever possible.
According to forecasts, the bad weather will affect not only the coast but also inland areas of the region. Rainfall is expected to ease by evening, but it’s still too soon to let your guard down. Emergency services remain on high alert, and residents are closely following updates and advice.
