High-Speed Train Traffic Between Madrid and Andalusia Completely Halted After Córdoba Disaster

Authorities launch Emergency Response Plan

A high-speed train derailed in Adamuz. 39 people were killed and over 150 injured. Authorities are responding urgently to the tragedy.

Sunday evening in Andalusia turned into a catastrophe that will remain etched in the memories of locals and the entire country. Near Adamuz station in Córdoba province, an Iryo high-speed train traveling from Málaga to Madrid suddenly derailed. About 300 passengers were on board, many of them returning home after a weekend or business trip.

Preliminary reports indicate that the tragedy occurred around 7:45 p.m., as the train was entering the first track at the station. Within seconds, the carriages began to overturn, with the screams of passengers drowned out by the screeching of metal. Panic broke out instantly, people scrambled to escape the mangled train cars, some climbing out through shattered windows.

Emergency response

Authorities in Seville wasted no time and declared a state of emergency. The Territorial Emergency Response Plan was activated to coordinate rescue and medical teams. Dozens of ambulances, fire brigades, and police rushed to the scene. Within minutes, the area around the station was cordoned off as relatives and journalists began to arrive.

Rail traffic between Madrid, Córdoba, Seville, Málaga, and Huelva was completely suspended for the entire day. Hotlines were set up for families of the injured and deceased: Iryo organized its own, and Adif provided the number 900 101 020. Psychological support centers were also established in Madrid, Córdoba, and Huelva.

Casualties and consequences

The official figures are shocking: 39 people have died, and more than 150 have sustained injuries of varying severity. Five of the injured are in critical condition, with doctors fighting for their lives. For many families, this day has become a dark date that can never be forgotten.

Iryo has also launched a hotline to support affected families. Authorities have promised a thorough investigation into the causes of the tragedy, but even now it is clear: this is the most serious rail disaster Spain has seen in recent years.

Public Response

Debate continues on social media and in the streets. People are demanding answers and justice, as well as a review of rail safety standards. Many are asking whether this tragedy could have been prevented and why such a modern train proved powerless against fate.

As experts examine the details of the crash, the country mourns those lost. Authorities urge calm and trust in official information, but emotions are running high. Spain is once again facing a test that challenges not only its infrastructure but also the lives of its people.
